Gargoyles: The Edge

Reviewed: 08/02/2013

.....Of Odin's Eye!

Well; we have reached the 10th episode of Gargoyles and Goliath's clan has hit rock bottom faster than an anvil hits a Looney Tunes character. Things cannot get any worse; can't they? Well; now there is a gargoyle stealing stuff as David Xanatos is donating the Eye Of Odin to suck up to the judge of public opinion on him; only it gets stolen by some gargoyle. Yeah; things are just getting worse and worse with each passing episode. So let's rant on shall we..?!

This episode is written and story edited by Michael Reaves. Animation is done by Walt Disney Japan and backgrounds are done from Studio Fuga. Additional animation services provided by: Nakamura Productions, Takahashi Productions, Light Foot, Studio Robin and Studio Cats.

We begin this one inside a dojo like gym with Japanese sounding music as Xanatos and Owen are doing taekwondo (Open Office; you SUCK!) to waste time. I cannot take Owen seriously in a taekwondo outfit; I really cannot. So we circle each other and Owen throws a side kick that misses; but the second one hits Xanatos in the chest and he falls down. Xanatos is in shock as Owen stalks in; so Xanatos invokes the LEGAL HAND OF GOD to stop that. Xanatos asks if he has been practicing because this is the first time he has ever lost to Owen. Owen asks if he should pretend to lose and Xanatos threatens to fire him if he does. Xanatos goes to his stack of green chairs to get his towel and put his watch on as Owen asks if he is all right and Xanatos claims that he is. Owen grabs his personal portable (and glasses) as David asks Owen what the next thing on the agenda is. Owen tells him to meet with the Emir at two o'clock; but Xanatos checks his watch and demands that he meet at one o'clock and walks off. Geez; that was cold. Owen goes to his cell phone (which looks more like a smart phone natch) and dials a number while we head to either the clock tower where the Gargoyles are; or Eliza's apartment. I cannot tell; all the buildings look similar to me. We head to ground level as we see Eliza dragging a television with a remote on top which drops the moment she tries to open the door. Then she stops and there's that red haired man in the trench coat who was driving Maria Chavez around in Deadly Force! The red haired guy grabs the remote and asks if he needs any help with watching The Late Show. I thought the Late Show was owned by NBC; and Universal is extremely pissy about copyright? Then again; this is the same show that showed Quack Pack TWO YEARS before it aired. Eliza thanks him; but is only storing the television until she's off shift.

So they both go inside as I discover that this is police headquarters because we jump cut to Maria Chavez in her office as Eliza thinks Maria is joking about something. Maria isn't joking around (or even jerking around with her pencil either) as Eliza is getting a partner to make sure she doesn't get killed again by some moron with a Patrick Star voice. Okay; I made that last part up. Eliza claims it was an accident; but Maria will have none of it as she heads to the door and the lucky partner of Eliza is: Maria Chavez's driver! Maria claims that he is a detective who helped her close the Dracon case. Riiiiiggggggghhhhhhhhtttttttt. All we saw of him was driving your car Maria. White male entitlement much there guys? Seriously; you put a strong, Latino, female detective who is supposed to be smart and after one mistake that caused by her; you had to play the white man card. Just lovely, NOT! I have nothing against Detective Matt Bluestone (except that his hair is red; it should be Matt Redstone, but I guess they are shooting for irony here); but the setup to make him Eliza partner is so mind numbly stupid because the implication is that he got the job despite us only seeing him drive Maria's car. Matt Bluestone is voiced by Thomas F. Wilson and according to Wikipedia (DANGER! DANGER!): Wilson had a small role in an episode of NBC's Knight Rider in 1984. His breakthrough role was as a bully named Biff Tannen in the movie Back to the Future. Wilson's talents as a comedian and an actor combined made Biff a character people loved to hate. When Back to the Future became a trilogy, he was asked to perform in these sequels again as Biff's grandson Griff and Biff's great-grandfather Buford "Mad Dog" Tannen. His famous catchphrases include "Hello! Hello! Anybody home?", "What are you looking at, Butthead?", "Say hi to your mom for me", "Why don't you make like a tree and get out of here". In every Back to the Future film, he always ended up in a pile of manure (in reality, a pile of decayed sphagnum and other plant matters) —in each instance, Wilson's Tannen characters were always trying to kill or hurt Michael J. Fox's character Marty McFly.

He reprised his role as Biff and voiced various Tannen relatives in the franchise's animated series. Wilson also played the role of a Detroit police officer in Action Jackson. In 1992, he voiced gangster Tony Zucco in Batman: The Animated Series and police detective Matt Bluestone in the animated series Gargoyles. He later went to co-star in Wing Commander III: Heart of the Tiger, a video game with Mark Hamill. It was the third chapter in the Wing Commander series, but the first to feature live action and was extremely popular at the time. The character played by Wilson was Major Todd "Maniac" Marshall, a fellow starfighter pilot of Hamill's character. Wilson also starred in the sequels Wing Commander IV: The Price of Freedom (1995) and Wing Commander: Prophecy (1997) and contributed his voice to the animated series Wing Commander Academy (1996) in the same role. He also guest starred in an episode of Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman in 1997. Wilson played McKinley High School's Coach Ben Fredricks in the 1999-2000 NBC comedy-drama Freaks and Geeks. Coach Fredricks dated Bill Haverchuck's mother. Wilson was briefly reunited with his Back to the Future co-star Christopher Lloyd in the 1994 film Camp Nowhere. Wilson also played as Simon, Hilda's dream date made out of dough in Sabrina the Teenage Witch in 1996. In 2003, Wilson appeared on the screen in a mockumentary movie called Trial and Error: The Making of Sequestered. Wilson has often lent his voice to animated productions such as Batman: The Animated Series (1993), The New Batman Adventures (1998), Disney's Atlantis: Milo's Return (2003), and The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie (2004). As well as the animated roles, he has continued to voice characters in computer and video games.

His latest roles are supporting characters in the film Larry the Cable Guy: Health Inspector and on the TV drama Ghost Whisperer. In 2004, Wilson played the role of Noah Curry in the Pasadena Playhouse production of the musical 110 in the Shade, also starring Marin Mazzie and Jason Danieley. In 2005, Wilson released his comedy album, Tom Wilson Is Funny!. In 2007, Wilson appeared in the episode "Whatever It Takes" of the Fox drama, House M.D., as "Lou", the father of Dr. House's patient. In 2008, Wilson appeared in the episode "The Baby in the Bough" of another Fox drama, Bones. He played Chip Barnett, owner of a tire recycling plant. Wilson appeared in an episode of the ABC drama Boston Legal (Season 4, Episode 7), "Attack of the Xenophobes", as a former police officer who is charged with murder. Wilson performed "Sleigh Ride" with Relient K on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, playing acoustic guitar. The members of Relient K are big fans of Wilson and invited him to perform on the show with them. In March 2009, he appeared as himself, busking, in Vidiotic, a comedy pilot on the British channel BBC Three.[1] He hosts a podcast, Big Pop Fun, on the Nerdist Network starting in November 2011. The podcast features Tom sharing stories of his career, as well as informal chats with showbusiness friends including Samm Levine, Blake Clark, Steve Oedekerk, "Weird Al" Yankovic, and more. He started his career as Chip in Knight Rider and Moose in The Facts of Life in 1984. Gargoyles is his DTVA debut and he also appeared on Pepper Ann as Coach Bronson and Buster in Buzz Lightyear of Star Command. Zach Stone Is Going To Be Famous (Mr. Stone), Dragons: Riders of Berk (Bucket), See Dad Run, Mad, The Heat (Captain Woods) and Spongebob Squarepants (as various characters in most of these shows) are his most recent credits. He has 114 acting credits, 19 self credits, 2 producer, and one writing credit to his resume.

Matt greets her and then we go into the hallway as Eliza tells him that she doesn't need a partner and doesn't want one; so she knows that this was an excuse to invoke the white angry male entitlement card. Matt claims that he is her partner now and they will have to make the best of this situation. Eliza thinks this is a conspiracy to make her suffer. That is what every old fart watching the new Disney thinks too. Except Eliza has a much stronger case. Matt proclaims that it wouldn't surprise him; which indicates that this is a conspiracy to make Eliza look dumb. I hope this fails in a huge way because the last thing this show needs is a contrived introduction to making Eliza into a second rate character which would be the worst thing to happen to the show. It would make the other contrived setups look high class in comparison. Eliza checks her watch and proclaims that she has something to do alone and will meet Matt again in 20 minutes. Matt doesn't seem to mind as we head to the clock tower AFTER HAPPY HOUR (after dark) as Eliza is one floor below in a room as she pulls a trap door from the ceiling which reveals the clock tower inside in full (where the gargoyles live now. I wonder; is the clock tower AT police headquarters?). She notices the television on the floor and hopes the gargoyles will like this housewarming gift. So we head inside the clock as Broadway is cooking on a hot plate with several pots while Hudson is sleeping on the purple loveseat. Eliza walks up and Broadway runs in and helps Eliza with the television; managing to lift it with one hand while dragging Eliza up with the other. Nice. Eliza then gets her ankles bit with a speeding remote control yellow car controlled by Lexington. Eliza threatens a speeding ticket to make him slow down. The clan asks if she will stay; but Eliza has to get back on duty as she asks for Goliath and Broadway states that he's in the nearby library which is next to the clock tower. So I guess they are at police headquarters then.

So we head to the library as Eliza calls for Goliath down the hallowed dark halls and then notice Goliath on a stool reading what he claims is Dostoevsky (a Russian novelist from the 1800's) which Eliza ribs him on. Then we hear a helicopter noise in the background; but that leads nowhere as Goliath is still stewing over Xanatos screwing with his home. Eliza wants Goliath to look at the bright side since he has a bigger library now; but Goliath isn't buying it. Eliza proclaims that Xanatos will not be on top forever because what goes around comes around. Riiiiiggggggghhhhhhttttt. If THAT happened; then every CEO in North America would stop acting like a psychopath and go into the poor house. Goliath proclaims that he wants Xanatos to feel his pain and he wants to find a way to make him feel his pain of losing his home. So we cut to inside the clock tower with a closeup of the new television for Hudson and Bronx. It isn't a six foot screen according to Eliza; which would have been fine if the television from Castle Wyvern wasn't almost the same size as this one. So we get footage of certain areas on mute for a while as Hudson likes the gift and thanks Eliza for the television. I guess that means Hudson is going to be on guard duty more and more often now. HEE HEE! So then we see David Xanatos in a museum looking at something; which shocks Goliath. Then we cut to a blue suit male with a green tie and black hair who addresses himself as Travis Marshall; whom I assume is the serious version of Stan Blather; is at the Museum of Modern Art. Apparently; David Xanatos is donating a treasure called the Eye of Odin (which is merely a golden ring with a blue stone in the middle) from his private collection. Goliath growls in non-amusement mode as Travis claims that David is committing a philanthropic act as Xanatos felt that this needed to be shared with the world and was the perfect tax write off. I should point out that normal people do similar reasoning as rich people do. See Kit Cloudkicker's motives for babysitting Molly for instance.

Goliath is in pissed off white eyes mode and he just storms out. Damn; I thought he would smash the television beforehand. Travis proclaims that if Xanatos keeps on with the gestures of good will; everyone would forget his prison record. Somehow; I think only a bunch of heels wouldn't forget his prison record as David admits making a mistake. Riiiiiggggghhhhhtttttt. Like I'm buying that stealing from a lab you claim stole from you was just a mistake. Owen arrives to inform Xanatos that his limo is here and Xanatos decides to leave as he blows off Travis Marshall on the way out. Travis does the Gruffi pose while cracking this smile that looked like "I'm onto you David!" Travis Marshall is voiced by the late Charles Hallahan (passed away in 1997) and according to Find A Grave (Yeah; my sources have evolved with this cartoon): Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1943, he graduated from Temple University with a Masters Degree in Fine Arts in 1972. His many films include, "Mind Rage" (2000), "Ambushed" (1998), "Dante's Peak" (1997), "The Fan" (1996), "Executive Decision" (1996), "Warlock: The Armageddon" (1993), "Body Of Evidence" (1993), "Dave" (1993), "True Believer" (1989), "Vision Quest" (1985), "Twilight Zone: The Movie" (1980), "Skag" (1980), and "Nightwing" (1979). He also made several television guest appearances including, "The Rockford Files" "Murder She Wrote" and "NYPD Blue." He also was a talented voice actor, appearing in several episodes of the "Gargoyle" cartoon series, between 1994 to 1996. He is best remembered to television audiences for his roles as, 'Ernie' on "The Paper Chase" from 1978 to 1979, 'Bill Davis' on "Grace Under Fire" from 1993 to 1994, and 'Captain Charles Devane' on "Hunter" from 1986 to 1991. He died of a heart attack in November 1997 after a car accident. He started his career in 1974 as Montfleury in Great Performances. Gargoyles is his DTVA debut and only appearance. Ambushed as Sheriff Carter was his final credit (IMDB claims that he was in Mind Range in 2004; which is DUMB!). He has 86 titles to his resume.

So we head outside the Museum of Modern Art AFTER HAPPY HOUR as we see a shadow of a gargoyle flying around the area. Then we head inside a hallway with has a lot of glass windows on the right hand side as a security guard looks around and admires a painting with the Gruffi pose. Then we hear glass breaking and the alarm sounds as he is woken from his stupor and runs with his flashlight in the hallway as we cut to a street in Eliza's red car as we discover that Matt Bluestone believes in the conspiracy theories that involve the Illuminati. I was hoping that Eliza would at least make Matt drive the car like he does with Maria; but no, Eliza is driving the car. Damn. Matt claims that they run the world and the president works for them. I'm not sure if being Anti-Vaccine was a huge concern in 1995; but if it is, I'm going to dread Matt if he brings it up. Eliza informs Matt that she doesn't believe in conspiracy theories like UFO's, Loch Ness or other such BS because the real world is strange enough as it is. BWHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! She'll be changing her tune in Season two; that much I am certain. Then we get a 10-31 with a disturbance at the Museum of Modern Art as Matt places a red police light on top of the car to indicate that this is a police car which looks awfully goofy on that car. So we head back as something got into the room where the Eye of Odin is and it looks like... Goliath? Oh wait; it's clearly a robot. The mechanical noises gave it away as the security guard rushes in and shines on the offender. It shoots a laser at it and grabs the Eye of Odin. We head outside in on the front steps as Eliza's car arrives and Matt gets out right away with his gun as Eliza pleas for backup because they don't know how many there are in the building. Then we see a window break on the northern pan shot and it's the Goliath look-a-like robot (as seen in Awakening Part Five) as it starts to fly away. Eliza then notices Matt pointing his gun at it and yells no at him; but the shot is already fired and that ends the segment nearly eight minutes in.

After the commercial break; we repeat the previous spot like a Japanese cartoon (oh wait..) and the bullet deflects off the Goliath look-a-like robot before flying away not caring who shot it. Yeap; it's a robot. Matt gets on Eliza's case about this; and Eliza blows him off because he could have blown up this thing and it would have exploded and that would have disaster. Matt asks if she has any idea what he was shooting up and Eliza proclaims that she has no clue at all. So we head back to Maria's office as Maria has a file of photos of these gargoyle look-a-likes; claiming that there are three of them and they don't mind being seen. Eliza spaces out saying that this makes no sense which draws the attention of Maria; but before that can go anywhere; Matt turns the channel on as we see Travis Marshall proclaim that they have the security footage from the night before. So the footage was given TO HIM; but the police are just NOTICING IT NOW?! That makes no sense. We see the footage and it's clearly looks like a robot as it smashes the glass and steals the Eye Of Odin. Apparently; it also attacked a security guard, which we never see. BS&P RULEZ~! So Maria turns off the television and asks for their opinion on the situation. Matt claims that they are bulletproof since a .38 bullet didn't even fazed them. Eliza has nothing at this point; but that look sezs that something is up. So we head inside the clock tower as Eliza informs the gargoyles that someone is dressing up like Goliath; indicating that Eliza already knows who is not behind this; which is the correct booking decision. So Goliath running out in white eyes mode was just misdirection on the part of the writers. Fair enough! Eliza puts out that gargoyles are tough; but not bulletproof making reference to Matt's bullet klanging off as Goliath deduces that it's Xanatos' Goliath look-a-like robots which one of the gargoyles claim that they are The Steel Clan. That was certainly out of nowhere.

Anyhow; Goliath wants to leave as he orders Hudson and Bronx to guard the home while he, Brooklyn, Lex and Broadway go outside to find David Xanatos. Eliza tries to run in and block the stairs leading to the door which is used when the cleaners want to clean/maintain the clock. She pleas for them not to go because public opinion of them is really low. I thought the opinion of them was rock bottom at this point?! Goliath blows her off because the time for hiding is past and it's time to make Xanatos answer for his crimes; forcing Eliza to step aside as the gargoyles leave the tower and fly off into the skies. So Eliza runs out to the front of the street to head to her red car; and suddenly, Matt Bluestone shows up. Damn; will you let Eliza handle her issues by herself? Eliza insists on doing this alone; but Matt refuses because those steel clad monsters are out there. Eliza proclaims that this is one time that she needs to handle this alone; but Matt counters that it's usually the time you need one the most. Eliza teases smacking him for that one; but then relents and tells him to get in. So we see them get into the car and speed off as we cut to a tower shot of Castle Wyvern as we see Xanatos in the castle garden with his coat whipping in the wind as it's clear that he knows Goliath is coming. So we see the gargoyle perch on the ramparts as Goliath lands in front of Xanatos and Goliath invokes the POINTY FINGER OF DEATH on Xanatos because he went too far. Wow; the bottom just fell out on Goliath now. Xanatos' reaction is so awesome as he proclaims calmly; and I'm paraphrasing here: I'm the best friend you got in the whole wide world which just plain pisses off Goliath as he growls and roars in white eyes mode. So we cut to Eliza and Matt entering the lobby as she tries to get to the elevator; but Owen come in out of nowhere to block. He claims that Xanatos is in an important meeting. Eliza claims that she was welcome here before; but things change according to Owen. Owen asks Eliza if she has a warrant and Eliza looks frustrated. Yeah; forgot that one little detail, didn't you Mrs. Maza?

So we get another shot of Castle Wyvern as Goliath's underlings watch on as Xanatos proclaims that soon everyone will be hunting them as Goliath blows him off again. Xanatos calls him picky and Goliath should focus on the big picture; even offering him and his gargoyles safe haven upstate. Goliath is so pissed off that he answers by tearing a conveniently placed lamp pole (which didn't exist in previous episodes) and then smashes it on the ground. Then he storms off; ordering the underlings to follow him and they all fly away from the castle. Xanatos: You're taking this way too personally. Well; of course he is Xanatos. It's not like you are shouting from the rooftops that you had NOTHING...AND THE ROCK MEANS NOTHING to do with those robots. So we cut to ground level as Matt and Eliza walk out of the building as Matt calling this a spectacularly unsuccessful venture. That means "Epic Fail" in 1995ish speak. Matt gets to the car as Eliza looks up and notices the gargoyles leaving the tower; but there is only three of them. Huh. So Eliza forces Matt to step on it as Matt calls this a future in good aerobics. Great; we have a detective who admits he is out of shape. So they get in the car as we cut to the sky with Goliath, Brooklyn, Broadway and Lexington flying as WD-Japan's animation is laughable as it moves like a HB cartoon. Brooklyn asks about Xanatos admitting his guilt and Goliath blows him off. I'll take that as a yes as Goliath is seething now. Then a red laser comes out and clips his wing. Goliath free falls; but manages to grab part of the satellite dish on the way down. The goofballs turn around and it's three Goliath look-a-like robots and one of them is wearing red armor with red wings. If you cannot guess who is controlling the red one; you have no business reading this rant. So we fly into formation and shoot lasers as the goofballs dodge; and yes, it's the Steel Clan again. Red Goliath takes on Goliath as Goliath claims that they have beaten them before and can do it again.

However; Broadway and Lexington gets shot down as Broadway takes a wussy bump into the chimney and WD-Japan screws up as the one brick somehow drops on Broadway' head like Jenga. That bump was wussy too. Then Lexington takes MAN-SIZED bumps onto the roof and tears up the railing and dangles on it. So we get a laser show from ground level as the denizens look on and one of them wants the police called. Speaking of moronicness: It appears that Eliza makes it on the scene as indicated by something red coming in from the right side; but before we see the shape; we cut back to Brooklyn jumping on one of the look-a-like's back. He tries to snap the guy's neck; but the DALEK BLUE ZAP FRY OF DEATH stops that and Brooklyn drops like a fly. Then the three gargoyle blitz through the giant ass chimney and causes hundreds of bricks to crumble onto the babyfaces. More flying around as Red Goliath uses his zoom eye on the in your face shot as it targets the babyfaces who are helpless in a load of bricks and that ends the segment nearly 14 and a half minutes in. This is mostly good; although I'm getting tired of these contrived setups to new characters too. Seriously; we meet a new detective who was Maria's driver two episodes ago? BAH!

After the commercial break; we see the Goliath look-a-likes appearing to want to finally kill the babyface; but then they fly in and then just...hover? Huh? Lexington wakes up and realizes that they are still alive as Broadway wonders why they are sitting there, not wanting to kill them. Goliath then realizes that Xanatos doesn't want them destroyed; he wants them dominated. Which is far worse than death actually. I'm amazed at the selective memory BS&P has: Goliath cannot say kill despite the fact that Broadway said the word earlier in the same context. So Goliath then realizes that they are hovering because Xanatos wants to find their home at the clock tower. Now the problem with this is: If the clock tower is police headquarters; then this would be the stupidest move on Xanatos' part because he has already been in trouble with the law only a few months before. So Goliath proclaims that they cannot stay here; and they cannot return for reinforcements. Broadway wants to tackle them again; but Brooklyn no sells. Lexington notices that they are a tougher batch then the last ones; most so Red Goliath so Goliath wants to fight this somewhere isolated. Lexington also deduces that they might be controlled by remote like his yellow car. That sounded tacked on for some reason. So the babyfaces all fly south while the heel robots follow them. We head to ground level as Eliza's car arrives and Eliza and Matt run out as they all see the gargoyles leaving the rooftop of the building. A blond male is using binoculars and those are stolen by Matt as he looks in them and WD-Japan screws up again as they used the SAME image of babyfaces and heels despite the heels having only three guys instead of four. DUMB! Matt claims that they are heading south which I already knew. So we fly around the city for a while as Lexington asks where they are going and Goliath points down to.....the Statue of Liberty?! Oh COME ON GUYS! You're going to fight them on a landmark? That sounds like some kids show from Ruby Spears in the 1980's for goodness sakes. You know better than that. Why not fight in Central Park?

So we head to on top of the statue of liberty as the babyfaces land. Goliath wants Red Goliath; while the goofball take on the other two three on two. Oooookkkkaaayyyy. So we shoot lasers and they dodge and there is a clear burn mark on the statue. So the group separates as Broadway gets one of the look-a-likes (I still think the Steel Clan would have been much better if the robots were not just Goliath look-a-likes; but clones of all the Gargoyles. Imagine a machine gargoyle dog? That's MONEY, MONEY, YEAH, YEAH! So Broadway dodges laser and then goes into white eyes mode as I discover that he watched the Wizard of Oz because he calls the look-a-like a tinman. He is playing follow the leader and flies right towards the stone slab that Lady Liberty is holding (the one with the Roman Number Date carved in) and then flies up; and since robots are always dumb and no one bothers to stop on a dime or change course; they fly into the slab and the robot explodes. Feh. Broadway flies away licking his finger as we see Goliath rumbling with Red Goliath as he tries to tackle him down from behind; but Red Goliath uses the jetpack to counter and rise into the air forcing Goliath to bail. Yeap; someone is in that suit and not on remote control. So we finally get Brooklyn and Lexington against the second underling. Why are there only two lesser Goliath look-a-likes? Couldn't WD-Japan animate FOUR robots? I mean; they already animated FOUR organic gargoyles already in this episode. Anyhow; Lexington flies left and then jumps on the underlings back as Broadway teases joining in; but notices that there are robot parts on the stone slab despite the fact that there no damage done to the slab otherwise. Broadway swoops down and grabs the claw arm part and then returns as Underling #2 invokes the PURPLE DALEK SHOCK OF DEATH on Lexington; but Broadway throws the claw part like a dart right into the heart. Lexington is forced off as the underling tries to use the jetpack; but it fizzles out and he drops like a fly and explodes onto the ground in front of the statue. This seems easier than last time too.

So it's down to Goliath VS. Red Goliath as Goliath grabs onto Red Goliath claiming that he'll never get rid of him easily as he pulls on the steel pipes in front and forces it onto the top of Lady Liberty's hair. Then we officially begin the fight after Goliath grabs the laser cannon from the arm and crumbles it as Goliath gets thrown down easily. Goliath uses the tail swipe to counter. Wow; I'm suddenly ranting like I'm watching MUGEN videos again. I should also point out that all the punches do make contact this time unlike Temptation. So Red Goliath punches him in the face; and that's enough to bring in the goofballs of doom as it's now 4-on-1. Wait; who's playing babyface here? So Red Goliath looks around for a while scanning all the robots and his cannon arm and they tell it that everything is destroyed. So the gargoyles stalk it; but Red Goliath Xanatos uses the jetpack and flies away without further incident. LAME-O! I was hoping they would unmask him since most of the audience should have picked up that the red Goliath lookalike was acting a lot more human than the underlings. Red Goliath flies into the moon as Goliath appears to want to roar in piss off mode again; but here comes a blue police helicopter; and the babyfaces all bail and fly away towards the bridge. We cut to inside the chopper and Travis Marshall has joined Eliza and Matt as Travis thanks them for the exclusive. Who does this guy think he is; Buck Williams? The spotlight is cast on the broken robot parts and that is that as we return to in front of the clock tower as Eliza is talking to Goliath; informing him that the public has been reassured that they are only robots and not real gargoyles. Who created them; is still up in the air, but unofficially, Goliath believes it's Xanatos and if Xanatos tries another stunt like that; they will fight him together.

Then we get a whiplash jump cut to morning as we pan down from the tower to ground level as I finally discover that the clock tower is indeed at police headquarters. So there you have it everybody. So we see Matt and Maria come out as Matt is complaining because he doesn't believe that they are robots; that they were flesh and blood as he saw in the binoculars. Maria claims that it was dark and they were a long way off. She has a point there Matt. Even with the binoculars; you only saw shadows. Matt isn't convinced and he's going to expose this one way or another. So then we get a northern pan shot to the clock tower (thus confirming it) as we see the gargoyles on the perch sleeping the gargoyle sleep while we cut to the top of Castle Wyvern as Owen tells Red Goliath that his plan to find their home went awry. And then it takes the mask off and it's David Xanatos. Called it ten minutes before it happened I should note. Maybe they should have unmasked him and then have him escape. It's not like Goliath doesn't know that it's Xanatos already. Anyhow; he proclaims that everything was perfectly fine since the city owes him a favor for donating the Eye Of Odin which is back in his personal collection again (BASTARD!), he tested the exoframe Goliath look-a-like robot and he also stood up to Goliath who is the greatest warrior in the world right now; and he was worried that he was getting soft. He proclaims that he still has the edge. So Owen and Xanatos look at the sun as we zoom out to end the episode at 21:10. This was better than Enter MacBeth; but it was just good since it was basically a pointless wild goose chase just to play mind games. The fighting here was great until the end when it went 4-on-1 and then it went south. And even WD-Japan is screwing up spots now. I hope that this is a one off thing too. Call it *** 3/4 (75%). I'm just not feeling this show like I do TaleSpin for some reason and I don't know why. It's supposed to be a serial and groundbreaking and yet, I'm seeing a Batman response that doesn't quite click on all cylinders. Ten episodes; Goliath has now hit lower than he did before Enter Macbeth, and only the first thirty minutes of Awakening, the end of part two to part five, and Deadly Force have been great so far. I never thought I would have a higher opinion of the episodic TaleSpin (and agree with Damon) than this show; but I'm seeing it now.

Another good; but not great episode of Gargoyles is in the books. The introduction of Matt Bluestone was laughable because Matt was seen only once and he was in the most undetectable role of Maria's driver, so I couldn't take him seriously as a detective and felt that this was just played to create sexual tension with him and Eliza; which has been done much better with Rebecca and Baloo; who have considerable flaws that are opposite of each other and thus have meaning and they made me care about it. Matt/Eliza is just there to suck; and feels so much like a white male entitlement thing than anything else. The whole plot was silly as the Eye of Odin was nothing but a prop; but at least the fighting was much better (except for the ending where Red Goliath fled without so much as an unmasking since the gargoyles already knew it was Xanatos and he fled before the helicopter arrived anyway.). Although Goliath at least fought Xanatos to a draw; he still looked bad since Xanatos committed ID theft; which is pointless since he already did that the first time in Awakening Part Five. And what is the deal with Travis Marshall? He sounds like a dramatic version of Stan Blather. Also WD-Japan screwed up several bumps as well. Overall; this was a good episode that lead nowhere and only served the purpose to amuse David Xanatos at the expense of everyone else. And Goliath has still not won a battle yet. This is turning into a bad country song now. Let Goliath WIN for once! Next up is The Long Road To Morning which is the first flashback episode since Awakening Part One. Lovely. Then it's Her Brothers Keeper and Reawakening to end season one officially. Please let Goliath win ONE battle before the finale, PLEASE?! So....

Thumbs in the middle pointing up for this episode and I'll see you all next time.
