Gargoyles: Vows
Reviewed: 08/25/2012
... And A Lot Of Illuminati Guys!
So we finally end disc one with David Xanatos and Fox getting married and this marriage seems more like a reunion of time than an actual marriage. This is also the debut of Petro Xanatos; who is David Xanatos' old man, plus the return of the Archmage who thinks he's better than Ramuh. Yeah. So; let's rant on shall we...?!
This episode is written by Shari Goodhartz and story edited by Michael Reaves. Shari started as a writer for Star Trek: The Next Generation (Swell; now Gargoyles is getting writers from that show now) in 1990; and then proceeded with Exosquad, Aeon Flux, The Savage Dragon, Phantom 2040, Wing Commander Academy, Young Hercules, Galidor: Defenders of The Outer Dimension, Dragonheart: The Beginning and Medical Maverick. Raw Toonage is her DTVA debut and she also wrote episodes for Bonkers. The Attackmen is her most recent credit and that is it. Strangely; I did both Q&D for episodes of Raw Toonage and mentioned her; but the only reason I did those episodes was for the guest segments since they were Don Karnage, Scrooge McDuck and Launchpad McQuack. I'm still waiting for the Gosalyn one to appear somewhere so I can complete the cycle of life. Okay? Animation is done by Sae Rom Productions. Believe it or not; Sae Rom is still around and actually making cartoons themselves like Sunwoo and their website has wiggling and giggling effects on all their links too. They are regulars for Dora The Explorer and Go! Diego! Go from Nick. So they went from a hand drawn Batman-equse show from Disney to preschool stuff in Nick. Ponder that one for a moment. Even stranger; the website claims that they worked for DARKWING...DUCK despite the fact that I have no evidence to suggest that from my rants. Aladdin makes sense and even Clerks; but not Darkwing Duck. It's possible though that they are uncredited since they started a couple years before Sunwoo started on Disney contracts...
Opening Moment #1: We get the RECAP OF DOOM from Awakening Part One and Eye of the Beholder including Goliath "We are one; now and forever." line which I bet Goliath is eating them right about now; if he hasn't already done so. On the other hand; they did show Goliath saying that only David Xanatos would regard love as a weakness.
We begin this one on top of the Golden Cup before sunrise (otherwise; it's a huge coloring mistake right off the bat by Sae Rom Productions. Not a good first impression from a animation studio that I have not heard about until now.) and we are on the roof as Goliath and Red Goliath are fighting again. Geez; that was out of nowhere. Goliath gets judo flipped and punched in the face while Goliath is in white eyes mode. Goliath is down as Xanatos takes off the helmet and blows off Goliath for attacking first and asking questions later. See; he is here to talk and Goliath blows it off as usual. David then states that he and Fox are getting married tomorrow and he wants Goliath to be his best man. BWHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! You cannot be serious David! Even Goliath has said the same thing; so you have lost your mind sir. David claims that he is serious and Demona will be there and on her best behavior. David is clearly taunting Goliath now as Goliath is shocked at this. So we head back to the clock tower as the sun slowly rises and the gargoyles are on the perch. Hudson tells Goliath that this is his decision alone; while Eliza calls this crazy. Goliath turns to look at the sun and claims that she is right and the gargoyles turn to stone. At least he finished his sentence this time. So we head to the sky shot of Castle Wyvern as a black helicopter lands on the ramparts and Fox actually is dressed up as a door opener. What?! So Owen has been given the day off? That makes no sense. Out comes an old male with a graying hairstyle and mustache wearing a brown suit, pants, shoes with no tie on; nor bow tie. That's awfully weird. David and this man have a stare down as we get closeups of their faces and then David greets him as his dad. So Fox (who looks awesome in that outfit) comes over to Fox and kisses the bride which his dad blows off as bad luck. David claims that he makes his own luck. I love real comments that aren't supposed to be real comments.
Petro Xanatos is voiced by William Morgan Shepard and according to Wikipedia (DANGER! DANGER!): He graduated from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art 1956-58 before spending 12 years as Associate Artist with the Royal Shakespeare Company. He appeared on Broadway in 1966 with Marat/Sade and later in 1975 with Sherlock Holmes. He won the Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Award for The Homecoming in 1995, at the Matrix Theatre. He is the father of actor Mark Sheppard.[1] He appeared in several episodes of different series of Star Trek, notably "The Schizoid Man" and "Bliss", as well as the feature films Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (as the warden of a Klingon gulag) and in Star Trek (as a member of the Vulcan High Council, but was uncredited). Outside of Star Trek, he is probably best known for his roles as Blank Reg on Max Headroom and Confederate General Isaac Trimble in the films Gettysburg and Gods and Generals. He has appeared in two roles on the science fiction series Babylon 5 (1994–1998), first as a "Soul Hunter" in the episode of the same name and secondly as Narn war leader G'Sten, an uncle of main character G'kar, in the "The Long Twilight Struggle". He was also a runner-up for the role of Ambassador G'Kar on the series, though the role eventually went to Andreas Katsulas. He also played a computer hologram for an A.I. programme during the first and second season of seaQuest DSV. He was one of several Star Trek actors who voiced characters on the animated series Gargoyles, including playing the father of Jonathan Frakes' character David Xanatos and as the Norse god Odin. He appeared in two notable episodes of MacGyver, as the incarcerated (and rather insane) serial killer "Dr. Zito" as well as appearing in the series Minder in Series 1 episode "Come in T-64, Your Time Is Ticking Away".
He appeared in the 1978 television film The Nativity. He starred alongside John Terry in the 1980 fantasy film Hawk the Slayer. He appeared in the 1992 comedy film There Goes the Neighbourhood. He narrated the introductions and mission briefings for the first four installments of the Medal of Honour video game series. He appeared in the 1988 comedy horror film Elvira, Mistress of the Dark as Elvira's Great-Uncle Vincent Talbot who was an evil warlock. He played Father Meehan in the Stephen King movie "Needful Things". Sheppard was cast in the 1996 adventure game Zork Nemesis, playing the live-action role of Bishop Francois Malveaux, one of the four alchemists central to the plot of the game. In 2000, he voiced the character Ignatius Cheese in the game Escape from Monkey Island. In 2002, he voiced the wizard Merlin in the Justice League episode "A Knight of Shadows". Sheppard played the role of Captain Archibald Witwicky in the 2007 live action film Transformers. He voiced over for the character John Adams in the Wii game The Conduit, and provided the voice of the keeper of the underworld in the television series Legend of the Seeker throughout its second season. Sheppard appeared in the television series NCIS, in the Season 6 episode, - "Broken Bird" where he played the older version of a man named "Marcin Jerek" while his son Mark Sheppard played the younger Marcin Jerek.[2] On 4 August 2010, Sheppard was announced as the voice actor for the video game Civilization V.[3] Sheppard appeared on Season 4 of Mad Men, Episode 10, "Hands and Knees", playing the part of Lane Pryce's father. On 4 December 2010, Sheppard appeared on Hallmark Channel Original Films Farewell Mr. Kringle as Kris Kringle. In December 2009, Sheppard voiced the part of Santa in Disney's Christmas special Prep & Landing.
Following that, he returned as the voice of Santa in the sequels, Prep & Landing: Operation: Secret Santa and Prep & Landing: Naughty vs. Nice. He appeared in the opening episode of series six of Doctor Who, "The Impossible Astronaut", playing the character Canton Everett Delaware III. He portrays an older version of Delaware while his son Mark Sheppard portrays the younger version in the same episodes. He and his son are among the few actors to have appeared in both the Star Trek and Doctor Who franchises. He began his career at Alec in Strongroom in 1962. Gargoyles is his DTVA debut and also appeared on Timon & Pumbaa as Captain Bloodbeard. An Enemy Of The People (Horster) is his most recent credit. He has 176 acting credits and four Self credits to his resume. So Fox leaves to freshen up for the wedding as we head inside the castle as Xanatos and Dad exchange notes and Dad keeps blowing David off. See; dad is jealous of David's wealth because it all came from a $20,000 museum piece coin which dad implies proves that David never earned anything in his life. David claims that when he stakes it; he takes it, in roundabout terms. He also blows off the suggestion that he would have been better off as a poor fisherman; and he'll prove that he's a self-made man to dad soon enough. Oh; and the armor is purely defensive. That is partially true so David is batting .750+ against his old man so far. They go into Xanatos' office as a brown haired man in a black robe arrives as Xanatos addresses him as Judge Roebling and informs him to come into his private office to view tapes because the best man and bridesmaid are unusual "people" so to speak. Roebling and Petro go into the office as Owen asks David if Goliath will show up. David proclaims that he will and he's betting his future on it as we get a shot of Goliath in stone on the perch of the clock tower. And then WE HIT THE FLASHBACK~! Despite no subtitles; I know this because Castle Wyvern in 994 was on a cliff at that time instead of on top of Xanatos' tower.
So we see Goliath swoop down and land as Hudson and Demona (another sign that this is a flashback) as Demona and Goliath embrace each other. Goliath then tells Demona that they must hurry for Prince Malcolm's wedding and Hudson tells them go on ahead. So we scene change to outside a building which I guess is the chapel as Demona and Goliath swoop down and land on the sill of a large window and watch on while embracing each other. We look inside as Prince Malcolm makes his return since the flashback in The Long Way To Morning; only this is before 994 (I'm guessing 982 or before since Katherine doesn't make any appearance here.) and he is marrying a princess by the name of Elena as they exchange rings and each put their rings on their beloved's finger and say "With this ring; I thee wed" which is a really good wedding line that needs to be said more often in wrestling wedding angles. Goliath calls this a strange custom; but fitting as Demona brings out a crest emblem and breaks it in two. She gives one half to Goliath and proclaims that they shall cherish it now and forever. By the way; spoiler alert: That crest is the legendary Phoenix Gate which you will be hearing a lot more of in the episodes to come. And yes; Goliath does say angel of the night, thus sealing my proof that he thought Demona was smashed to bits in Awakening Part One. We zoom out and then scene change back to reality (no, not really) as we see Goliath walking in the clock tower and then going into a secret dark room where all the spoils of war are present: Coldstone is in the shadows somewhere along with Magus' spell book, the Eye of Odin and the first half of the legendary Phoenix Gate; which is the relic Goliath roars at. So we head back to the grounds of Castle Wyvern as David Xanatos is now dressed up in a black suit and pants as Owen questions him about the medal pin and red triangle hanky pinned to his suit. Apparently; the pin is a symbol of the Illuminati Society; which David calls a risk he is willing to take more or less. So we see Goliath from the sky shot as he lands on the grounds and apparently; Sae Rom forgets to draw in black pupils for Goliath. Yeah.
So David greets Goliath and then gives him a ring to take care of until the exchange of vows (hence the title) which Goliath gets and walks into the castle. So we head to a decorated office as David Xanatos, Fox and the judge are here. Judge is in shock as Goliath makes his appearance, while we cut over to Petro and Owen watching on; and Petro is shocked to see Demona enter. Wait; I thought that Petro and Roe were brought into the office to allow them to see who Goliath and Demona really were before hand. So why are they in shock now? Bad logic break there Shari. Demona is not happy at all because she's here only because David insisted in coming and she wants him as an alley, which is hilarious considering that she is supposed to hate humans. Goliath asks her about their first vows together in the flashback; but Demon blows it off claiming that she is not interested in the past. So Roe starts the wedding and then asks Fox about having a real name; and Fox just tells him that Fox is her legal name. You got a problem with that sir? Roe continues the wedding as Goliath and Demona exchange rings to Xanatos and Fox (in that order) and they put the rings on the fingers. Wait; no "With this ring; I thee wed" stuff? That's a sloppy logic break there guys! Roe officially declares them husband and wife; and is about to ask David to kiss Fox; but Demona just walks out without saying a word. Goliath follows; as David proclaims that the fun now begins which earns a blow off from Petro. What the hell is your problem Petro? It's not David's fault two of the four principals for the wedding walked out after the rings were exchanged. Give him some slack sir! So we head out to the look off as Demona stares at the stars and Goliath comes in asking about the vows from the past. Goliath brings out his half of the Phoenix Gate proclaiming that he didn't forget as Demona brings out her half and they fuse the two halves together. Then we get one of the funniest animation blunders ever: The entire scene is fixed on Goliath makes various faces while Demona off-screen is calling him a sentimental fool. Yeap; Demona has SWEVERE him which isn't much since Demona is already a monster heel.
And then Sae Rom screws up as the Phoenix Gate is still in two pieces despite being whole in between scenes. Damn; they'll acting like Wang Films and Sunwoo now. Demona refuses the Phoenix Gate and uses it as Petro, Xanatos and Fox run into the teleportation and then disappear. If I missed any dialog; then I...No; you didn't miss anything. So we head to a windy forest as a star like cross appears; and then a fire circle like effect ensues which makes Xanatos, Fox, Petro, Demona and Goliath appear. Petro asks where they are; but Xanatos proclaims that it's not a matter of where; it's when as we get a shot of Wyvern Castle in the background on the cliff and that ends the segment eight and a half minutes in. I should point out that the backgrounds for the forest are much better than in Awakening; so thumbs up for that. I doubt Sae Rom did them because they are ruining this otherwise great episode.
After the commercial break; we finally get the subtitle for Scotland as it's AD 975 (so I was 7-9 years off; so shoot me!) as we see Goliath and Demona fly towards the castle. I know it's present day Demona and Goliath because Demona has the Phoenix Gate as the crack Sae Rom team screws up again as the PG is in one half this time. Dammit! So Demona refuses them together and chants the spell much to the panic of Goliath ; but he cannot do anything as Demona is engulfed in the gate ring and disappears. Ooookkkkaaayyyyyy. So then we head in the forest for a random circling of men wearing orange masks on horseback with swords; surrounding a male and female in cloaks on horseback. Then David, Fox and Petro run in and they kick ass both literally and symbolically. David uses kicks; Fox uses the best open hand punch ever (Baloo style) and Petro uses his brown suit coat as a clothesline. All three gets dropped on their asses off the horses and two of them flee. David taunts one of them and #1 rushes in; but Xanatos turns and kicks him in the back of the head and #1 goes down. Number one gets up and runs away northwest like a scalded dog. David and Fox get on horseback as Fox calls this a lovely evening. I love real comments that aren't supposed to be real comments. So the cloaked male comes over and reveals himself as the Norman ambassador to the Illuminati Society. Yeah; at least here it makes a lot more sense given which time period they are in now. And Norman (who has a upside down bowl hairstyle and red cape) shows his white glove to reveal an Illuminati golden ring. Norman and his female rider are bringing presents to Castle Wyvern and considers David an excellent fighter and Illuminati friend. So they are offered to come along to Castle Wyvern and everyone follows. Petro is riding a jackass I should note which is apporos for him do you not think?!
So we head to the castle as Goliath and young Goliath land on the ramparts (present Goliath on the top tower; young Goliath on the lower one) as young Demona arrives and land in front of young Goliath and they embrace. Hudson comes in yelling at Goliath that he has taken the wrong post (remember; Hudson is still the leader of the Wyvern clan at this point, and not looking any younger than he was before. At least Sae Rom didn't screw up in adding a scar on his face; that would have sucked.); so Hudson looks down and does a double take. He panics and backs up; so Goliath runs in and covers Hudson's mouth. So we head inside the castle grounds as we see David, Fox and Petro inside the gate with Norman and his female rider talking to Prince Malcolm as we discover that the female rider is Princess Elena with red hair and a blue suit with purple cape. And yes; the Archmage is watching in the background; sadly without his green robe, meaning that he's more useless now than he was in Long Way To Morning. See; Norman was sent so Elena could travel in secret safely because there are rogues and thieves wanting her head. I have no clue why and we'll probably never know in this episode at least. Norman and Elena also point out that the Xanatos (all three of them; now that Fox is officially married to David) saved them and David does a flourish just to annoy Petro. Prince Malcolm walks forward and gives David some gold coins; plus he offers food, lodging and fine clothes. Elena questions the safety of this wedding as Malcolm decides to have the wedding tonight instead of tomorrow so he orders his subjects to prepare the main hall and then walks up the stairs. Norman asks Elena about the gift as she shows the Phoenix Gate from her hands. Okay. So we head back to the ramparts as Goliath has his hand over Hudson's mouth and proclaims that he's a visitor from the future. Hudson is not buying this crap and sadly; it's not Sae Rom's animation skills.
So Goliath explains the situation about the wedding in his time and wants to protect the future of his younger self along with his angel love. He asks if Hudson will agree to that and Hudson does in this case. Then we head into a castle room which is clearly the Archmage (who wishes he was Ramuh about as much as Randy Pincherson wishes he was Kenny Powers) because he's throwing a pissy fit and destroying glass containers of liquid (neon green of course) into the walls. He throws the skull candlestick right into the opposite wall as it misses the Grimorum (I think everyone knows it's Magus' spell book) with only the candle wax flakes landing on it in one of the few great spots from Sae Rom thus far. Apparently; those bandits with orange masks were sent by the Archmage to steal the Phoenix Gate and he wants the Eye of Odin as well to secure the ultimate magical power. What the hell is he talking about? And doesn't this prove he is a useless mage to begin with. No wonder Malcolm is so high on Magus which pretty much gives away the finish of this episode in advance. He turns around to a dark shadow which is clearly a gargoyle as he orders it to steal the Phoenix Gate back and bring it to him; calling her his apprentice. The shadow walks in the light and it's....Demona? So Demona was working for Archmage all this time? Oh; now I see why Demona didn't like going after him after Prince Malcolm got poisoned. So we head back to near the gate as David (in the most redonkulous noble clothes ever. Purple and red with a small sword is completely out of place for a businessman. He looks like one of those Roman noblemen seen at Caesar's Palace. He gives a folder sealed with a red seal to Norman and he rides off out of the castle. Petro asks what he is hatching (wearing green noblemen clothes which look better on David. I guess David drew the short straw on getting the goofy clothing. Fox is wearing all blue with the wedding tiara crown) and David basically explains that he sent secret instructions to the Illuminati along with two smaller sealed envelopes. I'm guessing this is going to go nowhere.
And apparently; they are to wait 1000 years to deliver the first letter to David Xanatos in Bar Harbor, Maine which went over the heads of 99.5% of the audience in America. Petro does the Gruffi pose to show the (lack of) amusement he is having. David explains that it contains a coin that he flips and grabs. See; the coin is worth nothing in 975 AD (you know this makes the one subtitle at the beginning of act two worthless now), but in 1995, it's worth $20,000. The second letter contains instructions on how the coin was obtained and the message was gotten by him last week thus proving that he is self-made man. BWHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! This makes absolutely no sense whatsoever, but it's damn funny. He couldn't just go to Castle Wyvern in 1994 and got it there. Petro then gets in the "gotcha" question of the week: How do they get back home? So we cut to the castle bedroom where Princess Elena is looking in the mirror in a white night robe while brushing her hair. And she's so damn stupid because she leaves the Phoenix Gate on a clothed table with a candlestick next to the open window straight where Demona can go through the window and easily steal it. What an idiot this Elena is?! No wonder Prince Malcolm is so screwed up. Even dumber; as Demona leaves, Elena takes a glance and notices it is gone; but then goes back to brushing her hair for no reason. Yeah. Either this is a gaping logic break; or Elena is in on the conspiracy with the Archmage. Shari better hope it's the later; because if it's not, it's not a thumbs up episode anymore. Demona lands on the rampart and then suddenly; the fire circle gate shows up and Demona shows up from the future. Ooooookkkkaaaayyyyy. Goliath speaks her name and Hudson has no idea what he is talking about.
Young Demona is talking to future Demona (which is like Teddy Ruxpin talking/singing to Burl Ruxpin in the sense of the voice talent is basically talking/singing to herself. Keith David did the same thing; only Goliath/young Goliath haven't officially met...yet.) and young Demona is shocked. Demona wants to speak to Demona Y in private because the gate would attract some unwanted attention. Too late for that madam. Demona then does the Sae Rom cardboard background of doom and chants the Phoenix Gate incantation and Goliath #1 swoops down informing Hudson to keep Goliath Y busy. Hudson jumps off as Goliath lands into the fire circle gate and both Demonas and Goliath disappear as we zoom out to see Hudson holding back Goliath Y and that ends the segment 15 and a half minutes in. I can now assure you that Sae Rom did backgrounds on the forest and they only suck at logic breaks. Which is a step above Wang Films; but on par with Sunwoo animation. Otherwise; very good episode thus far...
After the commercial break; we head back to Castle Wyvern in 994 AD after Hakon destroyed it. Too bad Legend of Dragoon is owned by Sony because the tragic genocide of a village music in that game is absolutely apporos for this scene. And then somehow we jump cut to the rampart of Castle Wyvern as the castle is intact now and Goliath's statue is perched on there for no reason despite it being dark. Huh? So the circle fire gate opens and everyone drops on their bellies. Goliath gets up and gets smacked in the face on screen and Goliath falls down. That's not the amazing part. The amazing part of that sequence is when Demona smacked Goliath in face; we actually saw blood spraying like seeds. Not a lot; but it reminded me of The Bigger They Are, The Louder They Oink when the warden of Zibaldo Island got bit on the finger by Hogzilla. So yes; TaleSpin did a blood spray before Gargoyles did! IN YOUR FACE SHOW! Sure; Gargoyles did it as drama while TaleSpin did it for comedy, but so what? Besides; we saw blood stains in Rescue Rangers before this so there you go. Apparently; they were sent AFTER Magus did the spell as Demona P is telling Demona Y and showing the destruction of the castle which was done by the humans (omitting that Hakon was behind it along with the Captain of the Guard of course) and this is their future. Demona P knocks on stone claiming the humans did this even though we all know Goliath told Magus to do it. The others; yeah. Goliath not so much. Demona P wants Demona Y to stop this insanity and not to give it to the Archmage or anyone else. She wants her to use it because it's the power to destroy the humans (I see the no kill rule is in effect) and rule the world. Yeap; she FINALLY relieved her true intentions to rule the world all this time. The humans are just an excuse to justify her action. Monster heel indeed as Goliath slowly gets up and Demona Y goes over to console him; but Demona P grabs her by the arm and proclaims that he cannot be trusted because he cares about the humans more than the clan; and wants Demona Y to kill him now.
Demona Y goes into red eyes mode and blows it off completely as Demona P makes the fatal error of saying to her "I am the one you will become". Bad choice of word there Demona P. Demona tries to pounce on her; but Demona P flips her and lands on the ground. Demona P proclaims that she'll get the message even if she has to beat it into her. And she tries to smack Demona Y; but Goliath comes in (bad shoulder and all) and blocks it. Then Demona Y tackles Demona P down and knocks Demona P out cold. Demona Y slowly walks to the statue as she looks at the carnage and cries near the statue of Goliath asking what she should do. Goliath basically tells her to do nothing and don't wait nor look for this catastrophe; and live in the moment. This would prove to be a fatal error on Goliath's part because this moral sounds extremely stupid for obvious reasons; but in this case it will work as you will see later. Goliath goes over to Demona and Demona Y agrees to mend the petty jealousy of the past and keep her vows of love as Goliath goes over and grabs the Phoenix Gate from Demona which finally is whole for good this time. Goliath goes over to Demona Y and doesn't remember the incantation. Demona Y does and she chants it as the fire circle gate appears and all three disappear from the era as we get a closing shot of Goliath's statue pondering on the perch. So we return to 975 AD as David, Petro and Fox are on the ramparts as the fire circle reveals itself via a star cross and in comes Demona Y and Goliath who is carrying Demona P with him. David calls this perfect timing as Goliath proclaims that if the fabric of time wasn't so tainted to begin with; he would have left him here. Riiigggggghhhtttttt Goliath. David rubs it in as this is the ticket home as Goliath does the incantation as all the present babyfaces, heels and tweeners get engulfed in the fire circle gate and they all disappear as Demona Y is alone and up comes Archmage demanding answers to this outrage as he accuses Demona Y of losing the gate.
So Archmage uses that weak ass Lightening Come spell which clips her in the right shoulder which is hilarious considering that the gate is still in her procession as he is going to blame her for stealing the Phoenix Gate. Wait; what?! Hudson comes down in front of the kneeling Demona and calls Archmage out on it pointing out that the question should be "Who was she stealing it for?" Archmage is silent on that as he turns around; proclaims that he will not forget this and walks down the steps. We see him going down the steps as he decides to blame the Xanatos on the losing of the Phoenix Gate which makes no sense at all since they were no where near the Phoenix Gate during this entire ordeal; other than the teleportation sequences. So we can skip the next couple of scenes because they are from the flashback earlier and then we do the wobble and return to the present time as the whole ordeal took less than five seconds after Owen proclaims that the honeymoon began early as the Star Cross Phoenix Gate of Doom arises and all the principals are back while Judge Roe gasps in horror. Demona finally wakes up and shoves Goliath aside proclaiming that Goliath won nothing and it was a draw because while Demona failed to alter the past, he failed to change her because she remembers the vows of love and it meant nothing. Goliath can only say; more's the pity and flies off and Demona has teleported out on the far shot like that stupid mouse in La Purrfect Crime. Just lovely! Even WORSE; Elena is still a babyface at this point; so goodbye thumbs up episode right there as I predicted. David does make me laugh because after all that melodrama; he then cheerfully asks how Petro enjoyed the wedding. Petro takes out a coin and gives it to David and tells him that it's an American penny and that it might be worth something in a thousand years. In Canada; no Petro, the penny is gone as a unit of money here. He also leaves telling David that this is all he seems to care about. So that makes him hate capitalism. Whatever Petro.
So we head back to the clock tower as Eliza is angry that the clan let Goliath go as Brooklyn (after 22 minutes of action) wants to rescue him; but Hudson notices Goliath swooping down and landing. He just walks past the clock tower entrance as Eliza is yelling at Goliath for breaking his promise not to go (remember that Goliath said you are right before he turned to stone earlier; just before the flashback) and we hit the flashback and we get one of the most obvious background mistakes that shows this is first run syndication (ala Plunder and Lightning with the blue backgrounds in the cockpit of the Seaduck in part three) as the background used here is not in the castle; but an incomplete background of sky and iron bars. Seriously. And then they embrace themselves as we zoom out and they are still in the clock tower. The sequence was supposed to be them at the grand hall in the window like in the flashback; and then as the closing shot zooms out; they embrace as if they were in the clock tower and we end the episode at 21:23. Sae Rom; YOU SUCK! I don't have any hope for them animating this show anymore. Even Wang Films didn't make these type of obvious errors; most so in what was supposed to be a perfect symbolic finish. Wang Films has done a lot of wrong; but they did a killer ending with Jolly Molly Christmas. Otherwise; this was a good episode that Sae Rom screwed up; and Elena is an idiot so *** 1/4 (65%).
THE REVIEW LINE
Well; the wedding was short and sweet; while the honeymoon was really silly; but it was fun to watch David Xanatos play mind games on his dad. So much so; that it painted Petro as a jealous old man and giving David the penny made it even more so. Memo to Petro: Prove to me that you are more selfless than David and I'll reconsider your status as a jealous old man. Otherwise; stop acting like Gruffi wannabe. The Demona stuff with Goliath, Young Demona and Hudson was good and I did love the build up and everything about it writing wise was perfectly fine; except for Princess Elena acting like an idiot when Demona Y stole the Phoenix Gate for the Archmage. Archmage was his usual useless self and everyone else was fine. The only thing that was not fine is Sae Rom Animation. They screw up this episode badly: continuity errors with the Phoenix Gate halves, Demona teleporting when Goliath leaves and one of the worst backgrounds ever for an ending. Thankfully; there is an alternative version of this ending which corrects this; but that is on Youtube with Disney On Demand (only in America of course), and not on the DVD. What a shock since Disney has in the past use the wrong ED sequences for My Valentine Ghoul and Twitching Channels (I know this because I heard R.J. Williams' voice in Twitching Channels but his credit is on My Valentine Ghoul) for Darkwing Duck. I hated it so much. Overall; a **** 1/4 episode turned into a middling episode because of Sae Rom's inability to coordinate their episodes properly.
So this ends disc one of Gargoyles Volume 2 Part One. This was not one of the better opening discs as it had two thumbs down, two in the middle and four thumbs up. The Mirror delivered the goods and both Legion , The Leader Of THE PACK~ and Eye Of The Holder were great. Silver Falcon was good; but the other two I would pass on (except for the ending to A Lighthouse in The Sea Of Time which was great) because now Macbeth is becoming the Reggie Bushroot of this series and Derek has basically become a dumb chimera. Those two episodes show that this show is not delivering on the awesomeness it promised. In fact; Lighthouse devolved back into 1980's booking which pissed me off big time. So next weekend; we do the complete City Of Stone story arc as finally we find out why Macbeth and Demona know each other and finally Demona turns on David Xanatos for good this time. So....
Thumbs in the middle for this episode and I'll see you all next time.
