Gargoyles: Avalon Part Three

Reviewed: 10/01/2013

Come To Me Sleeping King; Battle Awaits Us!

Well; we finally come to the end of the Avalon trilogy of episodes as Goliath and company prepare for war against the Archmage, The Weird Sisters and the Scottish Bind (Demona and Macbeth). I hope this is epic because the first two parts were well written; but bored me for the most part. So; let's rant on shall we...?!

This episode is written by Lydia C. Marano and story edited by Brynne Stephens. Animation is done by Koko Entertainment with additional services done by Seoul Movie Company Limited.

Opening Moment #1: We have a recap of part two of Avalon which shows Archmage eating the Grimonium whole which is a neat spot I do admit.

We begin this one with a pan shot of Avalon Castle and then head into the forest with Gabriel, Angela and Goliath practicing the fine art of not being seen. This is not going to work; it's obvious now as per the end scene from part two. Gabriel hears leave rustling and thinks he sees something. Goliath tells Angela and Gabriel to get the Eye of Odin & The Phoenix Gate away from Archmage; while Goliath runs interference. Gabriel and Angela run off stage right as Goliath looks around and we see Demona in the foreground watching on. She then turns and follows Angela and Gabriel just as Goliath turns around. Goliath yells jalapena again as this has become his new DUBBED ANIME STYLE catchphrase; which is basically the ancient version of "oh; biscuits!". So we head back to the medic room as Magus, Katherine, Eliza and Tom are at the medic table as we have the scroll on the sleeping king. Katherine admits that little is known about this sleeping king other than he will sleep until his country needs him. Magus is sounding more and more like Owen Burnett by the second. Eliza wants to know where the sleeping king is and Katherine thinks that this is a dare because there is no telling what is happening in those hollow hills. Tom takes Eliza's side because they must leave no stone unturned. Tom is about to get his Goliath mask helmet; but Magus overrules him and wants to join in. Eliza channels Rebecca Cunningham because this is her idea see. So we head to a far shot of the paradise pools of Avalon as Gabriel and Angela hide behind rocks and we see no one on the first shot and then on a closer shot from another angle; Macbeth appears out of nowhere as the Weird Sisters are walking from the northeast. So we see someone thrust a gun behind Gabriel's back. Gabriel blows off Angela for ribbing him and then they turn around and somehow Macbeth has warped to with Demona. Logic break #1 for the episode barely three minutes into this thing. I mean; seeing Demona there is fine; but Macbeth. Macbeth was at the pools with the WS. Demona shoots; but Goliath runs in and screws up the shot in the process as it misses everyone by about five feet. Goliath is appalled that Macbeth and Demona are tainting their honor and wantoning killing innocent gargoyles in that order. Macbeth and Demona actually stop selling and shake their heads as there eyes go back to normal.

Goliath invokes the POINTY FINGER OF DEATH at the Archmage (for using them of course) before the Archmage appears laughing at Goliath for trying to get to their better natures. Wait; I thought Demona was long gone in the "better nature department" considering that she wanted to take over the world in Vows? Macbeth and Demona go back to Wii Zombie Eyes Mode (Man; this show hates Nintendo! Or maybe not...) as Archmage proclaims that he has big plans for Goliath; but the rest are expendable. And then he goes into Wii Zombie Eyes Mode and orders them to destroy everyone. Wait; aren't you suppose to say: Destroy everyone but Goliath? Man; Archmage is so useless now that he cannot even give out context properly. You have this big plan with Goliath; but you sound like you are aborting it? So they point; and then Bronx comes in to make the save out of nowhere (so he wasn't told to stay with Eliza? So where is Boudicca?); as Angela runs in and tries to grab the Eye of Odin from the brow; but she gets fried and pushed aside. Archmage is pissed off and proclaims that if they are so interested in dying well before dawn; then that's too fine by him as we pan up to avoid seeing everyone get "killed" by laser fire. That makes no sense since BS&P isn't going to allow the gargoyles to die right there and now since the episode would already be over. So we cut to another part of the forest as Magus is outrunning Eliza Maza. Eliza has to pretend that she is slower than 100 year old Magus. Magus apologizes for going faster because he's used to be alone. Eliza thought they were one big happy family. Magus claims that it was supposed to be that way and we hit the damn flashback AGAIN! DAMMIT WRITERS! I don't want to see another flashback in this three part episode. NO MORE! NO MORE! So we see Magus in front of an apple tree (which makes sense because Avalon's motif is lots of apple trees) in front of the castle with his harp as Tom is being chased playfully by Katherine. This is actually a pretty heartwarming moment; but I'm just tired of seeing flashbacks. Hopefully; this one lasts three or four minutes instead of half of the episode.

So Katherine dives beside Magus and Magus shows her a harp and she likes it. Tom brings in purple flower necklaces for fun; but then we fast forward to the young adult years as Tom and Katherine unofficially get married (I guess Magus is the JOTP for that one; which of course seems to be a unintentional rubbing it in by the happy couple) and make out together as yes indeed; Tom's hair is now brown meaning Mary has been bleaching his hair all those years. We then see them playing with the young gargoyles, and playing peek a boo while young Gabriel jumps off from a tree like a little Kit Cloudkicker would have done at that age. Only difference is; Gabriel would not land on his head every time like Doug Gilbert (as per a promo cut by Eddie Gilbert in USWA in the 1990's.). Magus sits at the tree sulking and growing out his white beard as we return to reality (are we really going to continue this stupid joke Mr. Weagle? Gregory: Ummmmmmmmmm...yip.) as Eliza and Magus make it to the waterfall. See; Magus gave up on marriage to Katherine because he is useless now without the Grimonium. There is a flight of stairs and an entrance way and you know what would make this make more sense? A rematch with Demona. Sadly; that won't happen as we go through a cave and see a full walk as the colored characters turn into shadows while walking inside. The only thing of note is Eliza saying that she thought it would be grander. Man; the timing of this scene is way off as we enter inside the hollow which is basically a version of The Red Marble Crypt in Toadie The Conqueror from Gummi Bears. Only this one has a lava pit encircling the Snow White type crypt. Eliza is in awe and then two suits of armor live again and walk towards Magus and Eliza in zombie like fashion. Eliza brings out the gun and shoot's the helmet off of one; but no go. So Eliza gets behind Magus and Magus chants in English as I realize that Latin chants are forbidden on Avalon. Geez; what does Oberon have against Latin? He basically freezes them in their tracks and they crumble to the ground.

Magus drops to his knees as we discover that he lost his original magiks years ago; but still has the magic lifeblood of Avalon. The problem is that he cannot control it and therefore without a conduit like the Grimonum; he's fighting a losing battle for control. Eliza rushes in; but the middle of the floor crumbles (as in Legion) and Magus tells Eliza to do a literal leap of faith. So Eliza does exactly that and clears the crumbled floor with ease and drops on her face in front of the crypt. And then; the bridge repaired itself completely without any indication that it was fixed. Bad, bad form there guys! So the sleeping king's crypt lowers to ground level (it was at least 12 feet high originally) as we see the sleeping king is a brown haired guy with a dragon emblem on his chest, steel armor, blue cape, golden like trim and a beard that is both brown with a gray bottom to accent the look. He is also wearing a red stone on his forehead attached to a headband. Eliza finally addresses the sleeping king as the king of Great Britain known as King Arthur Pendragon; which for those of you keeping score, he is the king Macbeth mentioned in Lighthouse In A Sea Of Time. Eliza chants that he is need and we get blue sparking thunder surrounding the crypt; followed by red DNA waves going up; and then we go to a closeup shot of Arthur's face as he is sparkling. Is Sunwoo doing special effects on the side? Arthur simply wakes up and that ends the segment eight minutes in. Damn; I was hoping for more epiciness and so far we had a fight last thirty seconds and a flashback which I didn't want to see anymore in this trilogy of episode and now then we have timing issues. Is BS&P being really pissy for some reason here?

After the commercial break; we head back to Avalon Castle and inside the medic room as all the gargoyles gather around and they are all fine. Wait; WHAT?! Apparently; as Bronx had made the save, Boudicca also ran in to make a save that we NEVER SAW! Angela thanks them both for this and I'm thinking: WHAT THE HELL?! You couldn't trim down some of the Eliza cave stuff to add a run in by Boudicca? Dammit guys! And then the doors open and in comes the Magus and Eliza bringing in the sleeping king himself which causes shock and awe to the gargoyle clain. Goliath takes this as having more success than he did; as Eliza proclaims that Demona and Macbeth are the greatest warriors of all time and Goliath has never defeated them. Goliath claims that they foiled their plans; or fought them to a draw. Wait; isn't foiling their plans count as a win?! If not; that's really stupid. So Eliza brought out the greatest warrior ever from the hollow hills which she presents the sleeping king himself King Arthur. King Arthur's first words that come out of his mouth; and I'm paraphrasing here: WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON HERE?! Yeah; he was a lot more diplomatic in this and I am. I'm as confused about this trilogy episode as you are King. King Arthur Pendragon is voiced by John Saint Ryan and according to IMDB: Born in Burnley, Lancashire, UK in 1953. Saint Ryan spent much of his earlier life in the world of Martial Arts both as a fighter and a Teacher. It was this life that led him in to the world of independent films. In 1983 he was brought on board the Brit cult action movie GBH as a fight choreographer, and was subsequently asked to play one of the villains of the piece. This developed over the next few years and Saint Ryan went on to co star in five more of these low budget independents finally in 1988 taking the lead in 'The Assassinator', an ambitious self penned dark action drama set in Northern Ireland,North West England and the mediterranean island of Malta.

The project was initially picked up by the progressive UK Channel 4 but was considered too politically sensitive at that time given its subject matter of the IRA and the 'Troubles' in Ireland. Following 'The Assassinator' Saint Ryan hit the 'boards' and spent some time in regional and West End Theatre. Then went on to co star in a number of British TV series until he was 're-discovered' in the bar of the Dan Hotel in Tel Aviv. At the time he was once again playing an assassin, this time sent to kill Dolph Lundgren in the movie 'Cover Up'. At that moment the producers of the film Delta Force 3 were looking for a replacement for Gregory Pecks son Tony. Saint Ryan fit the bill and so co starred alongside Nick Cassavettes. A picture deal with Cannon films took him to the USA and a string of movie and TV roles. He bounced back to the UK in 1994 to co star in the award winning soap 'Coronation Street'. On his return to the USA he continued to work in both TV, film and commercials, his most prominent being the TV series 'Roar' with Heath Ledger. For several years now Saint Ryan's passion and interest in horses has established him as a well respected horseman and teacher. He won the US National Championship in Doma Vaquera 3 years in a row (2004-2006). In 2007 he formed Galloping Gelding Productions and has filmed several documentaries on his favorite horseman and mentor Tom Dorrance. He began his career as Big Nick Rafferty (as John Barker) in G.B.H. in 1982; then followed up as Colonel Mitri Petrovich in Target Eve Island. Gargoyles is his DTVA debut and only appearance. Revolution as Bandit #2 is his most recent credit. He has 39 acting credits, one self credit, two writing credits (Into The Darkness, The Assassinator), two stunts credits (Cover Up and Medicine Man) to his resume. So we head back to the paradise pools as Archmage is pacing around as the WS inform him that Demona and Macbeth are going to Oberon's castle. I'm guessing that is the same castle as Avalon; but I'm not sure anymore.

The WS assure Archmage that they will die for sure. Archmage admits that he has been too complacent and will take no more chances and orders the WS's to go to the hollow hill and kill King Arthur. Now this is really stupid because the king is no longer in the hollow hill anymore and Archmage has a pool of holograms to make sure of that. Now if I were writing this; I would have this scene come first before Eliza and Magus make it to the crypt; and then have the WS attack instead of the living armor; plus Magus defeat them with Avalon's own magic. That way; this scene would make complete sense. I am hating Lydia's writing now more than I did when she wrote Ghost of A Chance because she's killing every chance for this trilogy to be epic. And outside of one spot by Angela on Archmage; Angela has done nothing of note. The WS asks what he is going to do and Archmage goes into zombie eyes mode and reveals a fireball wisp in his right hand proclaiming that he is going to wait for Goliath to come. So we head back to Avalon Castle and inside a room with a lot of containers of open flames. Katherine asks if Arthur will help them as Arthur states that he doesn't have Excalibur, nor his knights, nor Merlin. However; he sees about 10 pairs of eyes glaring at him, and he realizes that the need is great; therefore he will unconditionally help them. Gabriel enters from the door stating that the warriors have enter the orchard which Magus gets pissed of at. Arthur tells everyone to calm down because Tom and Gabriel are capable warriors along with Eliza facing these villains before. Arthur wants to lead the assault team against Demona and Macbeth; but there is the Archmage still to contend with. Goliath states that Archmage wants him; so he'll get him. However; Angela chimes in that she is going with him. It's about time they finally decided to use Angela as something other than eye candy. Katherine, Bronx and Boudicca will attend to the wounded as Katherine swears on her blood honor that no harm will come to the eggs again. Wait; so the gargoyles were breeding all this time? No wonder they suck at fighting!

However; there is still the Weird Sisters to consider and everyone looks at each other and then Magus steps up to the plate and proclaims that he'll deal with them. Now if I were writing this as I mentioned before; then my version would make perfect sense since Magus has defeated them twice, once with the Grimnoum and then a second time with Avalon's own magic. That way; Magus' gains confidence and makes this decision not appear out of nowhere. Also have Archmage order the WS to destroy him because he's the only true threat against him. So we head into the orchard as Macbeth (in zombie eyes mode) with laser blaster as Demona pounces from a tree as Eliza has apparently shot at Demona and missed. So we finally get the fight we wanted from the start as we have flying kicks by Gabriel as Demona gets knocked down. Macbeth is shooting at King Arthur who has a spiked mace (the weapon of choice in this series; next to the laser gun) hiding behind an apple tree while doing flips. Arthur checks his face as if he were bleeding despite showing no blood which Macbeth calls death magic. Macbeth shoots the laser at the tree and the tree comes down and of course Arthur teleported out the moment the shot came out of the laser gun. Arthur goes in from behind and Macbeth demands answers on who this is and King Arthur speaks his name and shoves Macbeth away. Macbeth stands there and has always wondered about fighting against the best as Gabriel kicks Demona in the face again and Macbeth doubles over in pain which King Arthur notices. Too bad they didn't do the same when Demona got nailed earlier. Damn; even the logic of selling the other one's pain is not working. Demona flees the scene towards the castle to separate themselves which is silly because it's still at least 3 on 2; but Macbeth or Demona manage a stray laser shot on Gabriel's wing and it appears to have a legit laser mark on it. Eliza, Gabriel follow Demona around the castle as we head to the hollow hill as the Weird Sisters notice Magus sitting cross-legged in front of the waterfall near the entrance.

The WS taunt him as he swings his staff at the WS; and then Magus calls upon Avalon's lifeblood as he strikes the rock in front of the waterfall and gathers enough power to nail the WS with the WII BEAM STICK OF DEATH. The WS claim that they were hurt; but it seems that it was their feelings for Magus using Oberon's magic against them because they completely no sell the shot. The Weird Sister proclaim that he will suffer and they shoot green thunder beams out of their eyes and mouth and fry Magus from where he stands. Well; Magus is really trying hard, I'll give him that much. So we head back to the castle ramparts as Demona hover in front of the gargoyles shooting arrows and gets off one laser blast causing the entire section of the castle to collapse and consume the gargoyles with it. Demona lands on the bridge as Bronx and Boudicca run in from opposite sides and Demona drops down onto the grounds and Bronx and Boudicca manage to stop before having a meeting of the minds. That was lame. So we head into the medic room as Katherine is tending to the wounded including the green horned female gargoyle who's wings appear to be covered in blood or burn marks. Now where were these marks in part two? Demona slams open the doors; the green horned female gargoyle gets thrown around like a rag doll and impacts the wall in which Katherine gets utterly pissed off since Demona is attacking wounded children of hers. And then we cut away to Arthur whacking the weapon out of Macbeth's hand with the spiked mace and proclaiming that now it ends. Macbeth does the flying kick of doom and then brings out a sword out of nowhere as we get a ground to sky shot of Macbeth saying that it indeed is over. So where did Macbeth get the sword; unless the spiked mace turned into a sword. I doubt that; that would be even stupider than most of Lydia's writing in this episode. So we head back to the paradise pools as Archmage is waiting for Goliath like the dick that he is.

So Goliath enters from the shadows in the sky and flies around the green smoke Archmage created for no reason that I can think of and then zaps Goliath like Megavolt. This is where "Lightning (Blessed) Come" in Latin would have been perfect; even if it is chanted in English because then Archmage could finally get that move over as a threat as Goliath is dropped to his knees while Archmage taunts him for doing lame stuff in his own mind. Back to the medic room as somehow Gabriel enters from the window and his left wing has blood on it. Okay; it looks like a burn mark, but close enough. Gabriel dares her to face one of her own as Tom enters. Has Tom done anything in this fight except move around? Demona proclaims that they will die together; but a gunshot is heard and Eliza comes from the door and tries to shoot again; but runs out of bullets. Oh great; considering what happens after this episode, I am going to betcha dollars to doughnuts they are going to find the "magic bullets" if you catch my drift. Eliza throws the gun away as Demona throws away hers; and they have the FIGHT OF DEATH. Did Lydia watch ECW while writing this? Not that I mind Demona and Eliza fighting against each other; but please stop acting like a stereotypical woman on woman fight! They knock away some stuff in the process as apparently; Demona is winning this one as we return to the paradise pools and Archmage creates lightning from the hologram pool proclaiming that he has waited 1000 years for this moment. I've been waiting for a decade for Lydia's writing to improve and it hasn't. And somehow; on the far shot, Goliath is nowhere to be seen and then he appears on the closeup. Goliath's selling is the best part of this and I have complete sympathy pain for him and not just because he's getting fried by the Archmage. Archmage calls this worth the wait in his face as Goliath drops onto his belly and then Archmage teases the evil laugh; but the segment ends before he can get the full laugh off. OH SOD OFF!! This ends the segment 14 minutes in and I'm getting sick and tired of this episode getting screwed up. It's easy to say it was BS&P; but half of this is nothing but carelessness.

After the commercial break; more fighting from Demona and Eliza, again in a stereotypical female on female contact way. If only these two were anthro cats; then we could safely call this a cat fight without automatically be labeled a sexist. So Gabriel and Tom run in to hold her down; but Demona kicks Gabriel in the bloody wing (and a good one too) as Gabriel holds his wing in pain. Eliza takes down Demona with Tom as Demona struggles; and in comes Bronx and Boudicca in the most awkward running into the camera sequence I have ever seen this side of a Dragon Ball Z episode. Demona is yelling and screaming that she must destroy them all as the laser gun is on the floor and Katherine grabs it and tells everyone to clear. Everyone bails as Demona tries to get up; so Katherine shoots the wall and the brick wall topples over Demona in a heap as she is entombed in brick. Okay; that was awesome! And if was from Katherine of all people as she basically tells Demona that no one threatens her eggs. So SHE created them? I hope so; because that would make her into a bigger hypocrite than she already is. So we head back to the waterfall as Magus continues to get fried by green beams from the Weird Sisters eyes and mouth which looks awfully cool I might add. So Magus uses the Avalon Staff of Death to cause a shockwave through the rock; which causes the Weird Sisters to be distracted enough for Magus to nail them and force them right into the waterfall pool. Good one Magus; because the Weird Sister get up, stop selling and then call for Avalon's aid themselves as they create a massive wind storm with thunder and lightning. Magus gets blown away; but his Avalon Staff of magic is stuck into the soil and it turns into a large tree. He gets behind the tree; but bails to the cave entrance because the tree is struck by lightning and gets sliced in half; followed up being set on fire. Well; the WS/Magus fight is going along smoothly. The Weird Sisters go through the flames and after Magus (which is not a logic break because they can live forever).

So we discover Arthur has somehow teleported in front of a tree and looking woozy as Macbeth proclaims that he has been sleeping too long. Arthur dodges and whacks Macbeth's sword away and knocks him down. He stands up and proclaims that he will defeat him. I also find out that he's wearing a red stone ring with the golden dragon symbol on his right hand. So Macbeth rushes him and they do the slow motion breaking of Macbeth's sword by Arthur's spiked mace; which annoys me because it was pointless. Arthur shoves him into the tree; uses the broken sword hilt to stab Macbeth's coat into the tree and then we get the POWER OF THE PUNCH Spiderman 1960's style as we fade to black. I guess Macbeth is done for now. So we head back to Magus crawling towards the crypt where Arthur was sleeping and the Weird Sisters come in with their green auras and they are pissed at Magus delaying the inevitable. Normally; when saying that, the heels always lose, but in this case there is a nugget of truth to this. The Weird Sisters then demand answers on the sleeping king and so Magus touches the crypt stone where Arthur was sleeping and chants for the armor to change into chain and the chain floats up in a blue aura and binds the witches to the ground with ease. Magus burns out literally and drops dead onto the crypt stone. And he really does die here as his arm goes completely limp in a wonderful money shot. So we return to Goliath getting fried with Archmage's magic as Archmage proclaims that he could destroy Goliath with one word. Goliath asks why doesn't he and Archmage proclaims that he is having too much fun as he fries Goliath again. Angel rushes in to make the save and pounces on Archmage. She tries to take the Eye of Odin from Archmage's forehead; but gets zapped as well. That is enough for Goliath to pounce on him as they tumble down the hill towards the lake like a bunch of little kids. Goliath tries to take the Eye of Odin; but gets fried and thrown into the water. Archmage casts ice to freeze the water. What is this now; Final Fantasy?!

Goliath tries to surface; but the ice is in the way as the top is only covered. If Archmage is so smart; why didn't he freeze the entire lake from top to bottom? Archmage gets on the ice surface as Goliath sinks to the bottom. Archmage teases the evil laugh; but Goliath rises up and invokes the POWER OF THE PUNCH to break through the ice. See Archmage; you freeze the ENTIRE lake; not just the top of the lake. Like I said; this guy has no street smarts. Goliath grabs the Eye of Odin again and hangs on while being fried as Archmage uses the Phoenix Gate to warp through space a half dozen times before Goliath finally get the Eye of Odin off of him. Archmage is on the grass as he realizes that he lost the Eye; but he still has the Phoenix Gate and the Grimonium is inside him forevermore. And then the lighting consumes him causing him to scream and panic in horror because he cannot control magic since the Eye of Odin did it for him. Yeap; no street smarts at all as he melts down completely and the Phoenix Gate lies on the grass. Sadly; they screwed it up by having Archmage say his dying words AFTER he was completely consumed. IDIOTS!! Goliath proclaims that it's over as Angela is crying at the hologram pool as Magus appears and he's dead. Well; not quite as we head to the hallowed hill as Katherine is in tears over Magus as Magus is clinging onto life. Goliath thanks him for saving his children despite Magus' sadness over cursing the clan. Katherine pleas for Magus not to go and wants to get him back to the castle; but Magus is too tired for it and wants to rest. He closes his eyes and his head droops to one side as Katherine cries over him and yes folks; he died from stress. What a sad way to go out after being kick ass for so long against the Weird Sisters. By the way; all the heels that are alive are in the crypt; along with most of the babyfaces who mean anything. So we pan up to the hole as we discover that this is a volcano. Yeah. A shooting star flies over the dark sky as we head back to the beach as everyone sezs their goodbyes.

Gabriel is offered to come; but refuses because he needs to be here; but Angela wants to go with Goliath. Goliath states that it will be dangerous; but she would be welcomed company as Angela likes that. Geez; I think Gabriel did a lot more to win this fight than Angela did; but whatever BS&P. Arthur decides to leave the island as he goes to his boat; but he will do it alone because he has a better chance of not being seen. Riiiigggggghhhhhtttt. You should ask Tom about that. Goliath informs him that if he makes it to Manhattan Island; to look up his clan. Arthur accepts as he gets in his boat and leaves stage left. Goliath goes over to the Weird Sisters as we see two gargoyles watching guard of a boat containing Demona and Macbeth who are still in zombie eyes mode as Goliath wants them to keep their end of the bargain and the Weird Sisters use their green eyes to cast green lasers at the two rivals and they get knocked out as a result. The two gargoyles then get off and push the boat away from the shoreline as the WS comment that they will not remember what has happened during the spell cast many weeks ago. Yeah; and you would think this feud would continue when they wake up; but they never face each other ever again in the television series. In fact; Macbeth only appears in two more episodes after this one: Pendragon and The Journey in Chronicles. So unless the feud is in the comics somewhere; the feud is a dead end angle now. Wonderful! The Weird Sister ask Goliath to uphold his end and he does by freeing the WS from their binds. The Weird Sisters disappear in a flame and that is that. So everyone hugs and sezs their goodbyes as Goliath, Eliza, Angela and Bronx get on the boat and they sail off. Goliath is the row gargoyle as Eliza somehow notices the Eye of Odin and the Phoenix Gate and asks about them. Goliath proclaims that he is going to send them somewhere where no one can use them anymore. Eliza is relieved because she wants to get to NYC as soon as possible; as Tom calls out to them that Avalon doesn't take them to where they want to go; Avalon takes them to where they need to be. Eliza asks what that means as we pan northwest into the fog and that ends the trilogy episode at 21:22. Yes folks; we have begun the Avalon World Tour, despite the fact that Goliath has the Phoenix Gate to get them back to NYC since he should have remembered the chant from Vows from Young Demona. So the whole world tour is contrived right from the start. I was hoping Goliath would just destroy the gate; or throw it away into the water, and then have Tom point out the logical fallacy. It's been par for the course from Lydia as this was a mess of an episode with logic breaks and stupidity from almost everyone involved. Magus and Katherine were awesome and I did admit that I had new found respect for Magus, so his death did have the impact that it should have; and Archmage was powerful; but not street smart which is a 500% improvement for him. Sadly; Angela was cannon fodder and really needs the Avalon World Tour now; and BS&P's fingers were really in the pie this time around; save for Archmage's gruesome death. Call it ** 1/2 (50%); because hell; I feel generous. What a disappointment?!

THE REVIEW LINE

Wow; what a disappointment this was?! I was expecting it to be epic; and it ended up being messy, chaotic and everything seemed off. I have never seen so many mistakes and timing issues with an episode in the old Disney era. Angela did little to impress me and she looked like cannon fodder throughout this. Gabriel actually did better than Angela and Angela is the new main character now. I hope this means that the Avalon World Tour will give her the character development that she needs because she damn well needs it and needs it soon before people start booing her. And then they annoyed me with another flashback that I didn't want to see; and while I would have written the scenes with Magus differently in order to really built up his character and make his death really epic; I was happy otherwise at how they handled the Magus/Weird Sisters battle as Magus really did earn his crew cut here. I did like the improvement of the Archmage; but that was because as a character he was at rock bottom so he could only go up; and in the end, he was an idiot. He needed wisdom more than control. There was a lot of really odd animation spots and timing issues in this episode; like the aborted laugh from Archmage before the end of the second act pissed me off; and the Magus/Eliza walk into the crypt looked off. I also liked Katherine's one shining moment in this too. Demona and Macbeth were fine; but Macbeth was effectively buried and since Pendragon is the last episode in the main series; the Macbeth/Demona feud will never be settled. The finish was good; and the goodbyes were all right; but I find the shout out by Tom to be contrived because if Goliath has the Phoenix Gate (and he does); then he could just warp themselves to Manhattan and then decide to destroy the relics there. In other words; the Avalon World Tour makes Goliath look like an idiot right from the start. Lovely. And what about the Frchmage? I mean; how can Archmage ever die if there is always one clone of him? That is the part that really fried my brain now that I have thought about it.

Overall; this final part was an utter mess; but it was still really fun and Magus finally redeemed himself; so I'm happy with that. As much as I would like to see better writing, timing and animation in this; I would still take this over the first two parts which has better animation, timing and writing simply because it went on forever with flashback and I wanted to see gargoyles and human kick ass on Archmage and company; and they didn't bother to do so until near the beginning of Act III of Avalon Part 2 (Magus turning the Weird Sisters into owls notwithstanding). So we are almost done the first half of the television episodes of this series as next weekend will be the start of the Avalon World Tour. Now I like the idea personally; but like the first two parts of Avalon; it goes on forever. Like 21 episodes long; with only two of those episodes being with the Manhattan Clan. So we will start with Shadows Of The Past as we return to Castle Wyvern; followed by Heritage as the first stop is in Canada. Now there is one I look forward too; just to see how many Canadian stereotypes they try to pack in. The final episode of Gargoyles for 2013 is Kingdom as we look at Brooklyn's first duties as second in command as they try to play mediator with the Mutates; because Fang is about to turn on them.
