Goofy's Brain Has Left The Building...Already!!

Welcome to more of the Fall Assortment as we conclude the "Best Of Goof Troop DVD" set with Max and PJ becoming a band; only to be screwed by a dirty stage manager and BS&P. I hope I can keep my composure long enough to finish this show; because it is sucking the life out of me. How does this episode fare? Let's rant on shall we...?!

This episode is written by Mirith Schilder. The story is edited by the late Bruce Talkington. The animation is done by Sunwoo Animation. Well; you knew we would get one of these.

We begin this one with a sky shot of a street in Spoonerville close to where Goofy's house is. We pan over to the sidewalk as Max is plucking the wooden fence with a stick. They are talking about subliminal messaging in music as Max claims he lives in it and we start singing about Suburban Cowboys while fake playing a guitar with the stick. PJ joins in and they are back to back as they slump to the floor and laugh. Yawn. Max claims that they are good... at making me go to sleep. Sadly; there is no Cookie Monster Punk to drop pipe bombs on their act. Max calls this their calling and they are the voice of the 1990's. I thought Gargoyles was the voice of the 1990's since they are even more over than this show? PJ checks his watch and they have to book it because it's time for the Ruptured Eardrums video. So this is Rebecca Cunningham's new boy band? AHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! POW! OUCH! Ummmmm... So we scene change to Goofy's house and for those of you who thought the bouncing building spot was a creation of Mickey's Mouseworks; you are dead wrong as Goofy's house is bouncing outside. So Max and PJ watch the television which we see nothing but lots of music. The music is not bad; but come on guys! In real life; the sound does not replace gravity and cause international objects and Waffles the cat to go flying. Waffles splats against the saloon doors just in time for Goofy to come out of the kitchen with two chocolate muffins with a cherry on top. Waffles breaks a wall and Goofy gets thrown back and then fights against it as we see a cooked turkey flying around in the foreground. Goofy wants them to turn it down because it's loud and replacing gravity for some reason. Goofy stumbles back as Max and PJ claim that it won't go any louder. We should only be so lucky. Goofy crawls and tries again; but the muffin pops out and lands in PJ's hands. PJ thanks Mr. G and eats said muffin. Max then asks Goofy about forming their own band. Goofy mistakes it as a fruit stand because he made cup-pany cakes. That's comedy. HA HA HA! I'm starting to write like Goofy. That's not horrifying. Max goes for amps; and we discover that Goofy is out of stamps. HAHA! Memo to Max: Turn the damn thing down already.

Max proclaims that they want to buy a band and Goofy gives him his blessing; and then Max pushes the button on the remote and Goofy gets rubber banded out of the scene. HAHA! Max and PJ cheer like mad as we head to a music fair. Yeah; just accept it and move on. Lots of stuff you see in a band is on display and I'm not sure you can buy them just yet. So the kids and Goofy look around as Max finally explains that they are forming a band and buying musical stuff for their band. Goofy destroys a drum with the trombone unintentionally (of course) just to be Goofy. Goofy relates a story about playing the ukulele in a band once; but Max and PJ don't want to hear it. Wippersnappers! The ukulele is AWESOME! Goofy plays with a green electrical guitar and the strings screw his hand for a while ending with Goofy creating a Cat's Cradle guitar. HAHA! He gets loose and showed it; which is punished with one of the strings nailing him in the ass when Goofy's back is turned and he jumps up like a super ball up his ass. And you know it's Sunwoo animating when the jump spot is completely blurred. So we scene change to inside as we see a cool dognose sitting in a lawn chair (whom I assume is the clerk of this music fair) as Goofy and the kids are talking towards him. Goofy claims that he's the cool dealer who trips and crashes into some more musical stuff; which when he pops up proclaims that they will buy it all. The clerk (who looks like a rejected hippie) offers $65 for all of it and Goofy calls this low. The clerk is confused as Goofy calls this second rate equipment. Only Goofy would banter with someone to RAISE the price of something. Sounds a lot like critics of Wii who wanted Nintendo to raise the price of the Wii when it was selling out years ago. The clerk is insulted and they banter as Goofy keeps raising the price and the clerk lowers it to $50 and free home delivery. AND THAT'S HIS FINAL OFFER SEE! Max accepts the deal and the clerk looks like he just realized that he got done in by someone even stupider than he is. Goofy proclaims that he still has the touch as he pulls his bow tie. I wish there was a camera in it because a flash scene changer would be perfect for this; but we get just a normal, boring scene changer...

...and return to outside Goofy's house with a shot of the garage. So we fire up the puppies (UH OH!) and the garage starts bouncing. We head inside as Goofy and PJ are on a makeshift stage playing air guitar while Pistol is watching on on a crate. Max adjusts the speaker on the air guitar for full bodied sound. PJ wants to hear the roar; but Pistol wants to be a groupie; and dammit to hell if I can figure out what she is saying. Again; for all those people who hated characters speaking too fast; witness Pistol Pete. I just realize that Pete's last name is Pete. So is it Pete Pete; or Pete Squared. Max and PJ ignore her anyway and continue playing as Goofy walks out his front door calling for Waffles. I just realized something: it would be a funny visual if he is calling Waffles to feed waffles to him. Sadly; not only is he not doing that; but it just sets up Goofy to fly on the skateboard and rush through various international objects and taking the rake in the face; bounce off the beach ball and land on top of the garage roof to play buck the garage horse. HAHA! He flies into the air and lands off-screen with a wussy bump. Sigh Sunwoo. So we return with the boy band of doom playing some more as Pistol does a half handstand for fun and wants MORE volume. Max and PJ want to party on and they slap skin as the streak of minutes I have to not deal with Pete Squared ends almost seven minutes in as we cut to Pete's living room as Pete is watching his own used car commercials. You know someone is a self-absorbed twit when THAT happens. Pete's chair crashes into the wall for no reason as Pete demands answers to this outrage. Peg comes in with a bowl of popcorn stating that it's rock and roll. Peg doesn't seem to mind and when a popcorn bowl is involved; anyone who has watched It Came From Beneath The Seaduck knows what happens to them and damn I'm so good. Sunwoo's animation of the bowl landing on Pete's head makes Hanho's one in TaleSpin look like Disney Feature. Peg wants Pete to give them a chance; but Pete proclaims that rocks will not roll and the music will die along with the musicians. Oh yeah; murder them, that will get you over Pete. NOT!! Peg stops Pete at the pass because this means so much to them. Peg asks if he wants to break their little hearts and Pete decides that he won't as Peg leaves. Pete has a better idea: let the music world do the breaking of hearts for them and thus no one can blame HIM for it. So we scene change back inside the garage as Goofy runs in with his ukulele. HAHA! And yes kids; the bees knees was around in 1992; so it isn't a new phrase or anything.

Max and PJ are not exactly thrilled; but I notice that they don't have the hatred of old stuff as the Quack Pack nephews do; nor the smugness that go along with such a bad character design. Goofy's ukulele snaps some strings as Goofy asks if the kids need any sage advice. Max thanks him; but doesn't need it as Goofy offers to play a solo tune. Max no sells; but he can do it later. Goofy sulks off as Max puts on the SUNGLASSES AT NIGHT and it's time to rock and roll again. And cause magical gravity to screw gravity over. PJ is Deadvolt PJ and Max is Swampwater Max now. Whatever lame brains! YOU DO NOT DISS THE UKULELE~! Goofy wants to join in as Greenthumb Goofy and even shows off a green thumb print OUT OF NOWHERE to force the point. Lucky for the writers; Goofy covers the break up by claiming that the strings had green mold; which disgusts the kids. Finally; a spotlight beckons (in broad daylight no less) and Pete enters with the video camera; calling them out for not having a music video done. The kids are cool with it as they jump up and down while being filmed. Why does the thing look like a missile launcher target? Pete then gives the video camera to Goofy and Goofy doesn't like it because he thought he was going to be the ukulele player of the band. The kids don't mind Goofy being the video taper of this outfit and really; who can argue? Answer: Me. Because you don't diss the..you know. Pete wants a touch de la Goof so he can give the thing to Sawvey Records which makes the kids' faces light up with excitement, Goofy not so much. Pete leaves and mocks them as he is going to give them enough videotape to hang themselves with it. Hey; this is actually a clever nasty plan by Pete. I'm sensing that these were the best three episodes on the DVD for the purpose of making Pete look better than he actually was in hindsight. At least it's a much easier task then Quack Pack. So we head back inside as Goofy is filming upside down from a ceiling beam. Sadly; the lens cap is still on the thing; so Max has to take it off for Goofy as Goofy is too giddy to get this show underway. Goofy is happy about this idea and then drops and falls on his head off-screen to another wussy bump. Sigh. We cut outside to Pete mocking Goofy some more and then we scene change to Pete at the sidewalk near the parcel pickup mailbox. Pete has a package which is shaped to look like the box from a VHS tape. Pete puts the thing in the mailbox and proclaims that when the record company sees this; they'll step all over each other to wanting to shut the weasels up. Pete laughs and that ends the segment 10 minutes in. A better start so far as Goofy is bumping more than usual...

After the commercial break; we go to a building with a record statue on top. I'm guessing that this is Sawvey Records and we head inside to a spacious office with a Goofy dog with brown hair, a cream coat, brown vest and a cheese bowtie. His upper lip seems to be stitched like he is a doll. He also has Bushroot's voice (Tito Insana) so I'm guessing that he's Colonel Carter; the president of the record company. On his desk is a pile of VHS tapes he picks one from the middle which is the Goof Troop tape of course; (the one with the package paper) as Carter seems to not care how good they are; as long as he can rob them blind. So he plays the tape and we see the footage of Max and PJ making asses out of themselves; with Pistol doing better than both put together. And Max is driving a tractor; why do you ask? And PJ is using a blow dryer too. Carter likes this and declares himself richer to boot. So we scene change to a far shot of Pete polishing his motorboat which he somehow came back after getting murdered by a metal shark in Slightly Dinghy. Pete has earmuffs on despite the fact that no music is actually playing. Sloppy sound editing choice there guys. Goofy is yelling that Sawvey Records is on the phone and the kids open the garage and run out into the house. Pete wants to hear the disappointing news first hand as we head to Goofy's living room as Goofy is on the phone. Max and PJ are wondering what is the verdict as Pete tells them that there are other careers which are quiet careers. Goofy then tells the kids that the record label is offering them a record contract and everyone cheers; except for Pete of course. Pete: If they rejected the boys now; the episode is over and we are exactly halfway through the episode; so why are you shocked? Pete proclaims that they cannot do this and the kids are surprised and ask why. Pete then sees dollar signs as he wants to be their stage manager; which is going to turn him babyface at some point; since Carter is going to trump him on the heel scale. So we go to Sawvey Records and go into the circular hallway in front of a door with a star and it's office #712. So that is Dino Bravo's dressing room? Pete wants to do all the talking because he's the stage manager as Carter opens the door and welcomes his next victims...ERRR...next stars to his record company. He motions everyone to come in as everyone except Pete makes it because Pete gets the door slammed in his face. HAHA! Stage manager indeed. Pete bangs on the door demanding to be let in; but no dice as we head inside the office as Goofy comments on the smell. Carter states that it's merely rubber incense which is on fire in a vase on a nearby table. Carter proclaims that their post-modern, unpolished music could be a platinum record hanging on the wall someday as the kids are in awe.

Goofy foolishly stands in the perfect position to have his ass near the vase of burning incense and we have GOOFY GOOF ON FIRE~! HAHA! Carter panics and opens the door, screams fire and then slams it in Pete's face again. We get the educational line of the episode and there is a green carpet from Turkey on the floor for Goofy to stop, drop and roll into. Max and PJ overkill the scene by grabbing a fish fountain full of water and pouring it on Goofy. Carter gets pissed off at Goofy; but then catches himself and decides to add it to the cost of what the kids owe already. The kids are confused as Carter has already paid for all the expenses needed to get the band going; as long as they pay all of it back. So Pete opens the door as Carter gleefully lets the kids out to get started on the concert and then orders Pete to clean the mess; or he's fired, despite the fact that he doesn't work for him. HAHA! So we scene change to Goofy's station wagon (the orange one with a flower and picnic basket in the rear; luggage and tarp on top of the roof) AFTER HAPPY HOUR (After dark) as Max is dozing off in the back while PJ is alert which looks kind of fishy as we finally park near a hotel and everyone gets out. Max wakes up and thinks he's getting the ultimate room service; but in reality, he's just getting an average place to stay. The outside is decent enough; but we scene change in the hotel room and there is no blankets, pillows of covers on the beds as PJ and Max are looking up in their PJs. Max's is good, but PJ's is banana yellow. GEDO FASHION SENSE; BEGONE FROM MY TELEVISION SCREEN~! Oh wait; there are pillows and one fly; which Max tries to smack despite not even being close to him. The kids talk about sheets as we see Goofy with the green blanket as he snoozes off and Pete has to grab the smaller blanket and turn off the light. So we get some thrilling (read: pointless) "babyface annoys tweener with snoring and tweener is pissed off" stuff to waste some time. I find this pointless since this episode is already moving at such a snail's pace already so Pete steals the blanket and talks about flushing Goofy down the drain; but it would scare the cockroaches as the sun rises up and Carter is somehow inside the motel room as the blinders are up and Carter wants the kids to wake up. The kids complain about being only four blocks from home and Carter almost lets it slip out that he cannot make money that way; and then recoils saying that he is training them for the rigors of the road.

He also wants his motel cash (so he owns the motel eh?) now; so Pete goes to his pants and then realizes it. So he then steals Goofy's wallet and gives him Goofy's cash which Pete adds the heel touch of making it sound like Goofy is giving consent too. Carter accepts the cash and if it isn't enough, he'll add it to the ownership list. So we head to a restaurant which looks like your local diner with an arrow in an apple. Everyone is sitting at the table as Carter is ordering half a dozen eggs, bacon, pancakes and for the kids; they get an English Muffin to share. Goofy and Pete get nothing of course. Carter eats like a pig which would have made more sense if he was a pig anthro to begin with. PJ decides to change the subject about writing a song about a vampire bat; but Carter blows it off because they are performing Carter's material his way because it makes booking and money funneling easier. PJ is not amused; but Max seems to be sleepy and has little problem with it as long as he is performing. Carter proclaims that they will be performing their ears out as of course Goofy gets the bill forked over from Pete while sharing the English muffin. Max complains about breakfast; but Carter doesn't want to wait as he walks out and we scene change back to the hotel room as Carter unveils the new Max and PJ to Goofy and Pete; calling himself a genius. And they look like complete tools in that outfit as we head outside as the Goof Troop is packing the station wagon and Goofy is doing a better job with the lines then Donald was in Quack Pack. In comes the roofless red car with Carter telling them that the concert is at the Spoonerville Amplitheatre and drives away. We see Punk Maxinum Dweeb and PJ Goofyfoot sulking about having it be no fun anymore. Pete comes in to inform them that they must do the concert in order to break even as he shows the long bill list. Goofy encourages them because he has his ukulele with him for assistance. Something tells me that they need it; even though neither kid is thrilled with the prospect. Goofy screams rock and roll forever; and even Pete is not thrilled as Max wants to get out of this as the station wagon drives away to end the segment almost 17 minutes in. Can this episode be any more slow than it already is? Well; there's only about five minutes left in this episode so let's take a deep breath and get it over with...

After the commercial break; we head to the concert hall AFTER HAPPY HOUR as there is a full house of 10,000 people (in that theater? Riiiggggghhhttttt..) as Max and PJ look on and they have stage fright. Max doesn't want to be a rock star anymore and notices some big ass CHEST OF DEMONS tipped on it's side. Max thinks it's the exit and they go inside and the lid shuts and PJ calls this lame even by Max's very low standards. Huh. So the adults walk in and Pete is still heelish in proclaiming that he got the fools to pay $20 each; which means that they made $200,000 at the gate. Which is not a bad gate; for 1982. In wrestling; that would be an awesome gate outside of LA or New York. The crowd is getting restless and chanting for Goof Troop as Carter wants the kids and Goofy wonders where they are. Carter doesn't care because if they fail to perform; he forecloses on both Goofy and Pete and doesn't even bother to hide the fact that he's a thief before walking out. Geez; an MPAA company projecting themselves onto a RIAA industry. Back then; it would be big bucks; and now today, it's their downfall. Viva le Internet! Pete is angry because he got screwed by Carter (oh; the irony); but Goofy wants to find the kids. More chanting and so Pete pushes Goofy on stage to run interference while he finds the kids. I think we all know where this one is going now don't we? Pete looks for the kids and Goofy goes on stage, plays the ukulele and gets booed out of the building. Rinse, lather, repeat. Max tries to pick the lock with a metal rod; still no go. And so we start the sideshow as one of the audience members knows it's Goofy turning his back on them. This is not a good start to the proceedings. I refuse to call any of this because it's been done to death. Goofy? Your jokes suck and somehow PJ has teleported right into the audience and has had a complete wardrobe change back to his old duds. That is just sloppy background design. So Goofy bails after getting hit by the lamest Emo Vegans (Kim: Is that possible Mr. Weagle? Greg: In this world? Yes.) I ever did see as Pete and Goofy hear Max yelling and the trunk bouncing around as Pete shoves Goofy back on stage to run interference while he gets the kids out. His dancing is a million times funnier than his jokes; but these are EMO VEGANS and they have less than a zero sense of humor nor grace. You can guess the result as Pete invokes the wooden SLEDGEHAMMER OF PLOT on the lock as the kids seem to be getting more and more pain without making contact with said hammer. Goofy is a mess coming back and Pete tells him to go back on stage because this lock seems to hate sleazy heels and Pete isn't acting like one right now. So Pete uses the blow torch on the lock as Goofy is on stage on a stool (NOT THAT ONE!) with a dummy of himself in different color clothes. And the style is the old classic shorts style too.

He gives the dummy a glass of water to drink which begs the question: if that's the dummy; what does that say about Goofy's IQ? That doesn't work as Pete uses the jackhammer to drill through the lock. Goofy juggles a watermelon, pie and the ANVIL OF NEIDHARTS as Pete uses the REDNECK AUTOPILOT OF DOOM on the lock and it pushes the chest onto the stage and bowls Goofy over as he gets all three objects dropped on his head for good measure; popping an actual laugh from the crowd (which shows how sadistic they really are) and the chest manages to open and let the kids out. Goofy introduces the kids as The Goof Troop and the kids slowly go on stage. Max tries to tune his air guitar; but it breaks and the crowd boos. Why? I thought rock and roll loved guitar smashing. So Goofy gives Max his ukulele which has somehow become an electrical ukulele. Why? Max tunes it and it sounds normal as Goofy proclaims that he forgot to plug it in. But the ukulele wasn't electric when Goofy showed it to us the first time. Huge, huge logic break there guys, the first major one of the series. Goofy plugs the ukulele in and it plays electric sound and the crowd pops for it. Sadly; we never get a proper rock concert sequence because we scene change to backstage as the kids return and Carter is happy because the act was a success and they'll make millions BABEE! PJ and Max agree he'll make millions; but not with the Goof Troop as they quit on the spot. Carter pleads for them not to go because he owns them and he discovered them. Pete grabs Carter and wants to MURDER him; but Max wants Pete to stand down because he is going to get hurt where it really counts; which is his wallet. And plus; this Goof Troop cannot afford a lawsuit anyway. Pete lets go and talks about making Carter wear the wallet on his face before storming out. So we scene change to outside the theater as everyone leaves and the kids are happy to be out of this gig and only want to be in the audience now. Goofy; despite getting booed out of the building, wants to go solo and put on some sequin pants that are tight, with rhinestones and a strobe light. Don't forget the ukulele Goofy. Nothing beats that, AND THE ROCK SEZS NOTHING BEATS THAT~! The babyfaces ans tweener carry Goofy away stage right as Goofy protests this outrage; remembering to be careful about the ukulele. HAHA! Circle fade out and we end the episode and "The Best Of Goof Troop" DVD set at 21:11. The ukulele rules over all of you; except for Kit Cloudkicker of course. Episode was the best one of the three which had more bumping from Goofy and a ukulele. Animation was okay; but the bumps were wussy, and there was a huge logic break at the end. Did I mention the ukulele rocked? *** 3/4 (75%).

THE REVIEW LINE

Well; we end the short DVD set with the best one in the set. Again; the problems with this episode are an allegory of the show: It's slow and nothing truly stands out unless it involves Goofy. I did like the twist of Pete being the babyface in this battle since there are so few heels and Carter was a greasy heel; but he didn't do such a good job hiding it as anyone could clearly see it. But the kids are naive and Pete's plan turned out to be the nicest thing he ever did to Max in general. And the ukulele rocks; although there was a huge logic break at the end (in a show with not many of them) with the ukulele not being electric powered and then suddenly for no reason was. Everything else was the standard stuff which was fine (although the PJ background audience bit was bad) but nothing made me laugh; except for Goofy's dancing and juggling at the climax. That is the general problem with Goof Troop: Goofy stands out great; but his supporting team is just there. While this show is a lot more tolerable than Quack Pack; there is no standout like there was in TaleSpin or Kim Possible (TaleSpin had Baloo; but it also had Kit (Who makes Max look like a dweeb simply by existing), Molly (a much better Pistol), Rebecca (a much more refined Peg), Wildcat (who is TaleSpin's Goofy) and Don Karnage (who would murder Pete with a mere stare). And there is no standout premise either; it's an asinine sitcom which has no real standout heel and Pete is more tweenish than heel. And there is Home Improvement to consider too. Sadly; Goofy sells toys unlike TaleSpin (otherwise TaleSpin would have been ran on until the adults got sick of it ten years later) and this show went 78 episodes and got two films and two Christmas Specials. Quite frankly; if they just did the two films and specials; it would have been perfect. But the show in general just sucks the life out of me because as I said; there is nothing that stands out and the stuff is done better in other shows. DTVA is supposed to be about action/adventure and this felt like a sitcom that looked fine; but why watch that when Home Improvement does the job better anyway? So all three episodes got a thumbs in the middle too. That ends Goof Troop for now; and I'm glad it's over. Not because the show sucks; but worse, it sucked the life out of me. I'll be glad to do Fish Hooks and Kick Buttowski next weekend. However; as a lifesucker as Goof Troop can be; Recess is probably worse in that department because the characters are much shallower and the adults are mostly brutal. Then again; Kim Possible is the last show I'm doing and that one will be a dandy. So....

Thumbs in the middle pointing up for this episode and I'll see you all next time.
