Meanwhile, Back At The Ramp

Reviewed: 01/14/2017

Pete Is Sucking Up To Suckers.

Yeah; nothing like sucking up then having a whimpy skateboard jobber like Slammer McTwist to try to sell lemon cars. Anyhow; this episode's story is that Goofy is failing Max in achieving anything tangible and needs to do something to impress Wanda Jean into giving him an award at the Awards Banquet. The secret to getting this award: Goofy has to ride a skateboard off the world largest skateboard ramp set up by Pete Pete. Oh goody! Let's rant on shall we...?!

This episode is written by Cathryn Perdue and story edited by Jymn Magon. The animation was done by Walt Disney Animation Australia PTY, Limited. with additional services provided by Freelance Animators PTY Limited New Zealand and Pacific Rim Productions, Inc.

We begin this one with a sky shot of the residences of Goofy and Pete. Normally; I would talk about the title card here; but notice how many episodes begin with this shot? Compare that to TaleSpin; even with their shots of Higher For Hire. TaleSpin's shot is really colorful even if nothing is animated; while Goof Troop looks duller even when it's animated. It shows you how much volume has bitten DTVA in the ass and how their syndication packages have cut costs. I don't know what Goof Troop's budget was in 1992; but it feels shoe-string compared to TaleSpin's; even if I find out Goof Troop spent more money than TaleSpin did. So we zoom into Pete's house as we see a woman catnose with a blue band on her forehead, purple dress and shoes with blue socks carrying a clipboard, a mandrill alarm clock and a golfing trophy as Pete has the RV trophy from the previous episode, which is continuity, so that's a plus (except that Pete claims that he got it for most RV sales during an oil crisis. Although; Pete lies a lot, so take that with a barrel of salt and don't believe this is a continuity error.) . He's also wearing a cross between a crown and the buffalo cap from The Flintstones; just to show you the low rent heel Fred Flintstone Pete is. I discover the woman's name is Wanda Jean (voiced by Edie McClurg) as she just wants to leave, because Pete is such a cocky asshole as Pete wants her to wait because he has something even better. Wanda claims she only needs one award for the reunion banquet as Pete is building the world largest skateboard ramp. Wait; what?! Wanda gives Pete all the stuff because the ramp will do; and runs over to interview Goofy. Of course the mandrill alarm clock is now a fish trophy; because there are at least three animators working on the same project. Wanda wants to know about Goofy's achievements which Pete calls a very short meeting and does the belly laugh on that one. We head to the attic as Max is reading the yearbook of doom while Goofy is checking out stuff inside his CHEST OF DEMONS.

Max thinks Goofy made the basketball team; but Goofy claims he fell out of the stands insteads. Heh. That was both painful and awkward; a perfect combination for Goofy. Max asks about making the swim team as Goofy somehow is looking at the chest of demons and at the same time; manages to notice his own picture in the yearbook. Now I know some people are wondering why I call him "Goofy Goof". Well; he's called that in the yearbook. Goofy proclaims that Max looks just like him and Max blows him off. He's right, Goofy. I mean; look at the hair. Nothing like Goofy at all. Although it's mucho nacho funnier when you consider that the DVD set artwork makes Max look almost exactly like Goofy. So the artists of the DVD artwork didn't buy a clue. Even more so since Max is shown in the television images on the DVD as he is supposed to be. Max puts the book down as Goofy throws away stuff like a Wuzzle. He didn't make the football team either; which I betcha he wouldn't remember. Remember that concussions can have deletrous effects on the brain. Goofy found his gray fured racoon cap; thus cementing his status as a goofy dumb redneck. Goofy throws something fragile off-screen since I heard shattering sounds as Max teases smiling; but then sulks and heads downstairs. Goofy finds his yellow S letter red high school sweater; which means he graduted from Spoonerville High School. Yes folks; Goofy's more educated than Baloo is and somehow still got a diploma. And we're shocked when people say that there is such a thing as white male entitlement?! Goofy of course demonstrates that by being unable to put his sweater on properly. And suddenly; we are shocked that millenials hate the old generation? Goofy is blinded and steps on a coke can and rolls through the window, screaming and shattering the window. The sweater arm lashes itself to a nail and Goofy swings around Wanda Jean as she is confused. Why is she confused? I guess she's never watched any of Goofy's shorts when he became an actor for Disney.

Goofy addresses her as Wanda Jean Schmettzer (According to Disney Captions. I think it is supposed to be "Schmeltzer" because it is a reference to Libby Hinson's original last name as discovered in Libby Hinson's appearance on the student film "Joy Meets Mr. Wrong" back in the late 1980's before she got the job as a staff writer for TaleSpin.) as they meet and greet. Max finally comes to the door, so I assume Wanda knocked on said door previously and that's why Max went downstairs. Max acts like this is awkward, which it is actually. Wanda calls Max, "Goofy Jr." and he looks exactly like his dad. Geez; everyone in this world cannot tell that Max looks nothing like his dad, even when Goofy was half his age. I also wonder: Did Max convince Goofy to have his name changed from Goofy Jr. to Max Goof? I SMELL A FANFIC COMING! I would have loved to see how Max managed to get his new name. Goofy Jr. is of course the name of Goofy's son during the "Everyman" cartoon shorts Disney released, but Goofy Junior is like Dustin Rhodes in that he's too boring and kids will hate it. At least they picked a name that wasn't embarrassing to adults and kids alike, so I'm fine with this. The sweater arm rips and Goofy drops on his ass saying that this is his soon. So Goofy Junior did change his name to Max somewhere down the road. I wonder why he did that? Hmmmmm... So we scene change as Goofy is now wearing the sweater properly and the babyfaces enter the house as Goofy proclaims that he and Max are two peas in a pod. Yeah; sure. When Max does the redneck scowl; then I'll believe you. Goofy's sweater attaches to the vase containing umbrellas while Goofy continues to mangle metaphors like Orac. Goofy turns into an umbrella bat on cue. HAHA! Max of course claims that it's two strikes and he's out. Is Max a New Jack fan or something?! Wanda wants Goofy to tell them what he has done since graduation and Goofy claims that he had his diploma framed as Wanda tells him that she wants him to do something a little more out of the ordinary. I guess in storyline; you cannot show off your various awards from Disney.

Goofy of course has no idea what that means and cannot get the umbrella out of his pants as Max proclaims that she means something exciting. I guess bumping for a hundred people is not exciting enough for Max's defintion of exciting. I guess the redneck speech of Goofy is not exciting enough for Max. Goofy embarrasses himself for our entertainment by walking with the umbrella in his shirt; but then embarrasses us for his own stupidity by getting off another animal cruelty joke on Waffles again. This better lead to a payoff of Waffles jettisoning Goofy and never coming back; or this humor sucks. This leads to Goofy getting stuck in the piano; which was in fact funny because he also stepped in rancid oleo which is slang for oil. He also went into surgery to have it removed; so that rancid oleo was not liquid. Goofy tries to pop the umbrella from his shirt during this as Wanda walks out after getting cut off way too many times and gives Max a piece of paper telling him to fill something out when he actually remembers something exciting. Because physical comedy is not exciting, you see. Goofy comes up with a stick but the umbrella is still stuck in his shirt as Max tells Goofy that Wanda has left. Goofy sits down on the sofa and continues to try to get the umbrella out; but struggling. Max claims that he should go for an award; but Goofy doesn't want to do any wild stunts. Goofy unpops the umbrella and opens it as he explains that people will think he's crazy. BWHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Yeah sure, Goofy; whatever you say. So his body corkscrews itself and spins with the umbrella as a top as we scene change to the treehouse of doom with Max and PJ acting like little children on the playground. Oh wait... And then we see Max and PJ arguing near a skateboard ramp in front of I think it's Pete's house. Oh wait; even PJ is claiming that Max looks like his dad. Do these people have eyes that make them see DVD artwork Max Goof instead of the real Max Goof I'm seeing on television? Max climbs onto the skateboard ramp as he tells PJ nicely to stop saying that or he'll rearrange his earlobes. In other words; stop saying that or I'll channel Rebecca Cunningham, business major.

PJ gets up and taunts him by saying it as Max calls "Death!" on him and they both do a duet fight on skateboards on the ramp. PJ claims that Max does look like his dad; and Max is cringing at this. Max turns around and wants to go over this one more time as he demonstrates that his ears are different than his dad's. Well; his ears aren't, but they are similar. Max screams that he is not like his dad and jumps onto his skateboard, loses his balance and falls off the skate ramp, just like his dad would. Nice, Max; you really showed Peej that you weren't his dad. That explains why you changed your own name from Goofy Junior, right?! PJ mocks him as Max grabs a red cover mattress and starts to attack PJ with it. PJ dodges all and laughs in his face because Max is an insecure child making empty boosts who hates his Dad because Dad is not neurotypical. Max is an ablest you see. PJ uses the skateboard to defend himself and falls on his back, deciding to call a truce, maaaaannnnnnn. Max stops and sits on the cushion, thus indicating that it's all a work. Damn; PJ was treating it like a shoot, maaaaaannnnn. PJ asks about being taught the 50/50 axle grind and asks if PJ can handle it and PJ tells him to try him. That is a bad idea. So we scene change to Max getting on the skateboard ramp as he does a skateboard move so basic, Tony Hawk would have kicked his ass, which is why Tony should have been a member of BS&P. Or not. PJ bounces onto the other side and destroys the ramp. Geez, Max; you sabotaged the ramp! There's no way I can believe that you didn't. After all; this proves that you are not your dad. Maybe not; but, you are still his son even if you are threatening to disown him. PJ blames it on his center of gravity. Sure, Peej, sure. Or maybe the ramp is not up to code. Which Max admits as he wants a bigger one; and suggests that they should use Pete's instead. So we head to Pete's Used Car lot which contains a 3/4 skateboard ramp which appears unfinished complete with steel fence and a sign that says "Slammer McTwist Here!"; with Slammer in large pink letters.

On the closeup; we see an out of nowher poster of a poster of a skateboard dood with blond hair and black shirt wearing purple gloves holding a purple skateboard with yellow wheels. That is Slammer McTwist and he's coming soon, and why does he have bubblegum bubbles in his hat? Max gets inspired as PJ gets off death reference #1 for the episode. Max climbs the fence with his skateboard; much to PJ's protests because Pete Pete might be watching and he wants to simonize the little runt on the last episode. That would be Max by the way. Max climbs to the top right side of the ramp as PJ climbs up after being taunted by Max. So PJ goes over as Max plays with the skateboard for a while and we get a logic break as the skateboard goes from being 75% completed to fully finished. PJ is on the ramp pleading for Max to stop because he wants a low risk activity like sleeping. Ummm; if Pete catches you, everything you do will be high risk because a black limo comes in and Pete grabs Max on the rebound and loses his skateboard. Pete gets in a "Wide World of Sports" joke; which is fitting since Disney owns ABC who broadcasted that show for ages before ESPN became a real deal on the television scene and not just a place to get your wrestling fix outside of the WWE or WCW machine. Max cuts a promo about improving his coordination skills. I wish he would improve his adult security skills; but that sounds awfully awkward to say, let alone do. Pete basically tells him to stay away from the ramp because he doesn't want anyone screwing up his big day, you see. That sounds reasonable. What wasn't reasonable: Pete slips on Max's skateboard and does a flip bump onto his head that looked like Grim Reefer's no air moonsaults. That sucked; Pete probably hated life. So much so that Max grabs the skateboards, stammers and then both kids bail stage right. Max and PJ run out as Pete basically calls him just like his dad and Max stops and takes this as if this was the worst thing anyone has ever said to him. Never mind that Pete hates Goofy and is a heel. If my allies were mocking me for this; I would be rightfully pissed off and unfriending them for that.

If a heel said that; I would be like: "Yeah, sure" because I would expect him to say something like that, because he's a heel. I would not take it to heart like Max did as he sulks off to a scene change to Max at the table with his elbows on the table staring at his spaghetti and meatballs. I'm tempted to say spagotti and meat bulbs; but I'm so over Family Circus's shtick, so I'll take a pass on it. Goofy pours ketchup over the pasta as he asks what is wrong. Max is magically wearing a blue bib over his shirt in the next shot as Goofy is wearing one as well when he sits down. Goofy asks about talking about it and Max no sells. Also; Max's arms change from black to pink to black in between shots, for no reason. Max asks what he does if people say that he goof things up and Goofy proclaims that he always goof things up. Which is in fact, true. Max asks if it wasn't in relation to another person and Goofy claims that it wouldn't bother him. Which is a reasonable thing to say. Max asks if it did bother him. Wait; if Goofy claims that it didn't bother him; then maybe that's a message that Max is insecure and needs to actually grow up. Max yells at him because Pete told him that he looks exactly like Goofy and Goofy realizes this and decides that he is going to make him proud and win an award for him which makes Max happy. Personally; I would love to see this, but this is not going to end well for Max nor Goofy as we end the segment almost nine minutes in. A fine start; but the mistakes are really jarring here. And Max's insecurity is really showing here and it makes him look like a whiner.

After the commercial break; we head underneath a yellow umbrella next to what appears to be outside a coffee shop with Wanda reading the newspaper at a table sipping coffee. Pan over and jump cut to Goofy on stilts in his high school sweater with Max cheering him on. When Goofy makes an analogy about the phrase: "nonsense on stilts"; he goes the extra mile in making it literal. Max runs over with the clipboard to find Wanda Jean (I pronounce the name as John and Max pronounces it as Jean as in jeans.) as Goofy almost loses his nonsense on stilts for a moment. Max will give the signal once he finds Wanda by the way. Goofy chokes himself on the stilts in the signal that he is going to screw this up, so nice forwarning there Goofy. Max finds Wanda and whistles as I'm pretty sure Wanda's last time is supposed to be an ode to Libby Hinson as Goofy is doing the most hilariously bad long jump stilting in history, which means that he's doing it right. Being a goof is a feature, not a bug. He pole vaults himself and crashes off-screen as Wanda shakes her head and apologizes. Probably feeling bad about Goofy killing himself for absolutely no reason. By the way; why must Goofy send in a trophy for achievement? What is the consequence for not doing so? If they wanted to create a reason that isn't based on Max's childish insecurities (Yeah; I know he's a child in storyline) that would justify Goofy killing himself, then Wanda should have also said: "If Goofy cannot give one; then he's uninvited." That would give incentive for Goofy to do this. Here; I'm looking at this and saying: "You only making yourself look like an idiot and you're making your son look like a whiny asshole." The former is funny, but the later is terrible. And if you want children to love him as a character, he cannot be terrible. So, Goofy lands in a trashcan head first and does his usual chuckling. Also of note is Disney Captions once again screwing up as Goofy said in the audio "That was that." while DC claims he said "That wasn't bad." Personally; the DC caption makes more sense with the scene; but the audio doesn't match it anyway.

So we head to the park as Max ties ropes around Goofy's feet and two SeaDuck color scheme beachballs. Yes folks; Max wants Goofy to be the second coming of Jesus Christ. Sorry; but WildCat has already done that in TaleSpin and he's not even an alumi. Well; not from Spoonerville, anyway. Max's idea is an epic fail! Max bails and returns with Wanda Jean as a duck gets nailed because we have to do another animal cruelty joke. It's bad enough Goofy does this to Waffles the cat; does he have to do it to animals he doesn't own, too?! This loon is pissed off (and pissing) as as flies over, eats the right beachballs and it bursts as Goofy turns into the Goofotor Boat of Doom. Duck laughs and so do I. That'll teach him to abuse pets. And before anyone points out Bubsy; Bubsy abuses sidekicks which is actually worse. We motor for a while with various shots and then the beachball fills with water, stops on a dime and Goofy sinks like a stone. HAHA! Max gives up as Goofy's feet show up as Goofy is grugling water. Scene change to Goofy on the sidewalk on a pogostick. Max remember to get Wanda Jean BEFORE Goofy does the pogosticking and Goofy waves to Max like an idiot because anytime someone doesn't see where someone is going in a cartoon; bad things happens. So Goofy splatters into the conveniently placed sidewalk segment that has extremely wet cement and Goofy is pertified literally a second after Max starts to run in to try to make the save. So yeah; I shouldn't depend on Max Goof to make the save for me when I get beatdown in a wrestling match either. Wanda shakes her head no as Max knocks on dried cement and Goofy thanks him for it. Next segment: Goofy is blowing up balloons tied to his stomach with a tire pump. I cannot believe his sweater is still intact after the cement incident. Laughable logic break: He is still pumping the balloon with air and we see the end of the green balloon break; but the balloon acts as if it didn't break.

Even though no balloons are present to fill; he is still pumping air and he flies up anyway. This was a trainwreck of a sequence by the animators; and they don't have the "Because Knack Animation" excuse to save them in this case. Goofy floats in the air as Max and Wanda run in. The problem with this is: There is a lot of public domain music and Goofy is right in front of Knives R'US which contains a giant logo of a switchblade; which apparently was designed to be a legit switchblade because the sign causes all the balloons to cue right on cue. Someone needs to sue that company, STAT! Goofy free falls and hangs around causing him to wedgie himself like a yo-yo. You can guess Wanda's reaction from there. Next segment: Sky shot of Max and Wanda looking on from a sidewalk somewhere in the suburban areas of Spoonerville as Goofy has skates on and a rocket pack; which I believe would be used in Wrecks, Lies & Videotape later on. Who let's a family, let alone Goofy keep a jetrock pack on retainer? This is really silly. It starts and Goofy rises into the air and loses his shoes and socks in the process. I should point out that he doesn't have black feet here. Max and Wanda shake their heads in frustration. I shake my head in Max's insecurity. Grow a thicker skin, Max. Goofy goes through clouds and that is that as we head back to sky shot of a park near a bridge with Goofy sitting on a bench as we get the worst animation ever. Goofy proclaims that he's never getting the award now and he is barely animated. Max has his arms out and it's like Max is a complete dummy because there is no animation of him. I was hoping it was a real dummy of Max and not the real Max because then this makes the non-animation look funny. Sadly; it's the real Max Goofy is sitting on an ice cube which is melting as Max proclaims that he tried at least. Goofy feels like he let him down; but Max is acting so happy like this. Goofy sounds geninue while Max sounds like a phony person. That's another major problem with Max as a child character: He sounds phony and it's not because he is voiced by the late Dana Hill. There's no way I can believe that Max is not wanting to blow off his dad.

Max wants to go out for pizza as a cure. How about a personality transplant, Max. Thankfully; Goofy no sells. Max offers to put little fishies on it. Yes folks; we now know exactly three people in DTVA who love anchovies on their pizza because we see Goofy and Max in their jeep literally stuck in a traffic jam that in any other universe would indicate someone has crashed into something. But since Pete's Used Car Lot is part of the jam; I'm suggesting that today is the day Slammer McTwist showed up. And I was right as Max is wanting Goofy to put a rain check on the pizza because he wants to see Slammer McTwist in person. Goofy is apparently all right with this (and they aren't getting out of traffic anytime soon; so what choice is there) as Pete tells them to not shove. So Max starts shoving in between the crowd as they are cheering for Slammer; all five of them. Max pushes through as we cut to Pete on a podium telling everyone to calm down because if they want him, they will get him. So we cut to a van side door opening and out comes Slammer McTwist wearing knee pads and elbow pads. Kit would look at this loser and say: "What a jobber?!" as this guy has a face on the skateboard and apparently; it got rocket features. He does his usual tricks on various objects as the crowd cheers. Not impressed. Do that in the air on clouds and then I'll be impressed. Somehow PJ appears on the scene for no reason to clap with Goofy and Max. Slammer ends by stopping in front of Pete after another boring trick. Slammer takes off his skateboard and gets on stage (another boring trick) as Pete addresses the crowd. Slammer's mission -- should he choose to accept it -- is to skate on the largest skaterboard ramp in history. Slammer sees the ramp and he no sells it. Kit's right; what a whimp! Even Max was "maaaaannnnnn" enough to do it; but Pete got in the way. Slammer (voiced by Rob Paulsen trying to be Townsend Coleman and failing by the way) bails on skateboard and Pete blows him off for it. I don't blame Pete for this; you signed a contract for this and you do it Slammer. Slammer blows him off because "Contract? What contract?" and gets in the van.

This cause Pete to stammer and beg for him to come back. Why not just sue him? It is clearly breach of contract! Pete calls this unique and exciting and never been done before. I hope this is true; so then I can kick Kick Buttowski when he's down some more for my pleasure. Goofy hears this and gets inspired as Slammer asks: "Who would be crazy enough to run that ramp?". I can think of one; but he's buried in the grave Eisner put him in right now, so Goofy will have to do on short notice. Max could; but Pete won't let him because he's a goof, see. PINCH! OUCH! Ummm... Yip; a child Rebecca Cunningham. Goofy proclaims that he'll do it as Max tries to pull him back as the crowd chatters and cameras flash while Pete does the Gruffi pose. We circle fade out and return as the skateboard ramp is magically fixed and Max is on it with the skateboard with PJ and Goofy looking on. How about that?! Max gets on the skateboard and does the basics as Goofy watches on. This is a fool's errand. Goofy chuckles and he's got it. Yeah; I'll bet. Goofy wobbles as he gets on the skateboard ramp and then slips and slides onto the ramp and uses his teeth to grab onto the ramp. PJ tells Max to try something simpler on a reverse camera angle. Cut to a porch complete with plastic umbrella table as Max is balancing Goofy on a skateboard. Max steers around telling Goofy about steering and Goofy rams into the umbrella table and gets buried as PJ suggests training wheels. So we cut to outside the house of Goofy as Goofy skateboards out and dances around before taking a sick bump into the garage door. Jump cut to Goofy does the loop-de-loop for a dollar fifteen around a tree branch before dunking himself into a trash can. That had to suck. Goofy rolls down the sidewalk as we cut to PJ and Max sitting on the lawn. Max tells Goofy it's time to just stand on the board. Goofy throws the trash can away and tries to stand on the board; but he flies backwards and takes another sick bump into a fire hydrant and goes flying. That also had to suck; Goofy probably should hate life now, but he's too stupid to notice. So we cut to Goofy in bed with an ice pack on his head as Max covers him with the blanket. So yes; he suffered a legit concussion and is actually selling it as a legit injury. Max walks out whispering that at least he won't have to do the stunt as Goofy has red circle eyes and the ice pack covers it on cue.

Goofy gets up as he's legit concussed; but acts like he's fine and got a show to do. Uh-oh! This is not good. He goes over to the drawers (NOT THOSE ONES) and finds nothing of note. So he finds a lamp and takes the lampshade and puts it on his head. Because concussions are suppose to be funny, you see. Except they aren't usually. Goofy does the zombie walk and literally walks out the window saying that his public await. Being concussed also kills his redneck scream to boot, so there's another reason why concussions are bad, kids. Cut to Max waking up from his bunkbed as he refused to change into his footy pj's while asleep. Scene change to Max and PJ walking towards Pete's lot AFTER HAPPY HOUR (after dark) as PJ asks how Max knows he's going to Pete's lot. Max proclaims it's a hunch and they panic as they see Goofy on the skateboard ramp in front of the full moon. Goofy rides the skaterboard ramp and flies off it of screaming as Max and PJ deduce that Goofy has gone ballistic. No?! Really?! By the way; at 15:45 of the DVD; there is a church in the background with a Christian Cross on it in plain sight. So yes; religious references have not been completely forbidden on DTVA at this point. Max and PJ run in as we head inside Max's house as the door opens and in comes Max and PJ with Goofy in a shopping cart. You know; the pace of this episode could be improved a lot if it was a much more wacky spotfest and we see Goofy land in the shopping cart; but apparently, 1990's Kid is all about talking and doing wimpy things. PJ asks about Goofy probably pulling this stunt off again; which is reasonable because the dood has a legit concussion. At least Max and PJ don't want him to do the stunt and are actually actively trying to prevent him from doing it. That I can be happy about; even if Max is completely insecure about his look. PJ and Max put Goofy in a room and lock the door as PJ asks who is doing the stunt now. Take one guess. Yeap; PJ and Max disguised as Goofy because Max now claims that everyone believes that he looks just like him. One problem; you are way too short and PJ is way too fat; and combine; you are still fatter than Kevin Owens. This ends the segment sixteen minutes in. This again is a decent episode with too many animators in the mix and it's causing bad animation and shot continuity.

After the commercial break; we head to Pete's used car lot with the giant ramp as everyone has gathered around to watch; including Wanda Jean with her camera on as Pete does a hard sell featuring bending over backwards and cartwheels. Considering that he's willing to allow Goofy; his enemy to do this, that is bending over backwards and doing cartwheels on Pete's part to pretend that he's acting like a human being. Max and PJ climb the skaterboard ramp as Max tells PJ to climb in sync with him and PJ is struggling because he cannot see. Max tells him that he doesn't want to. Yes he does, Max Goof! Crowd is cheering for Goofy on the sky shot because they are way too easy to please. Max puts the skaterboard down as PJ is dizzy and feels like he's going to faint dead away now; causing Max to tell him to relax because they are pulling this one off. Yeah; I'll bet. PJ has little control of his balance and clearly his center of gravity sucks; which makes this plan by Max even more dumb than it already was. PJ gets a step on the skateboard and even claims that he's going to throw up. Oh geez, Max; see what your insecurities have wrought here?! So we cut to inside Pete's house (Another problem with this show: I cannot tell the difference between Pete and Goofy's house because they look way too similar and neither house fits their personalities because of that.) at the living room while Pistol is watching television of the event. So even Peg thinks this stunt sucks; so I expect Pete to be in the doghouse again after this. Goofy is yelling and knocking on the door pleading for someone to let him out. So Pistol notices Goofy and is confused and talks a mile a minute instead of actually getting Goofy out of the closet. At least Pistol's confusion is understandable since she's supposed to be five years old and hasn't really got the naunce down pat yet, so her comparing Max to Goofy is perfectly reasonable. Goofy realizes that Max is on the skateboard ramp and panics as he pushes on the door. And nothing happens. Damn. Cut to Pete addressing the crowd on the podium as he calls Goofy "Goforit Goof"; which is funny in fact, as we begin the event right now. Uh-huh.

Max does a really bad contrived voice of Goofy; which shows that everyone is basically playing with Max's head at this point as PJ backs up and tries to weasel his way out of this because he cannot see that he's on the biggest giant skateboard ramp in history. Max pops into the sweater reminding that he's risking his life to get Goofy that award as PJ reasonably points out that if he goes through with the stunt; it's Max's award, not Goofy's. Max then realizes that PJ is right and it's best to stop this charade and call it off until Goofy feels better. Sadly; the skaterboard rides just as Max pops up from the sweater and tells PJ that this conversation will have to be ended for now. PJ asks why and they scream as they ride down the skateboard ramp. Max manages to do and does a loop-de-loop for a dollar fifteen as the nails are literally coming out of the ramp. This ramp is not up to code. This show innovated this concept and it's so amazing how many execs think kids would laugh at this. PJ and Max cannot believe they did this and instead of coming down and exposing themselves to prove that this was a facade, they scream "One more time!" and go down the ramp again. They really do it good as more nails fly out of the ramp while Pete watches on in sheer delight. Crowd cheers as Max wants warp speed and we go down the ramp yet again. Two wooden planks fly off the ramp and Max and PJ go through the ramp and swing around the steeple of the church at 18:23. Wow Disney, just wow. So the skateboard flies and lands on a sidewalk as the kids do a handstand. Crowd is confused; but cheers anyway because they are dumb to think that Goofy and Max look exactly the same. That's their fault, so says Max Goof. Cut to Goofy busting out of the closet and riding in the shopping cart yelling that he has got to save Max. Sure you do, Goofy. Save him from his insecure little childish mind. Oh wait...Pistol runs out wanting to join him promising to wear her seat belt in the process. (Molly: Wow; glad I don't act like her.) So Goofy and Max race down town on shopping cart and skateboard, so welcome to the ECW of DTVA.

Then we get a really contrived spot: Max rides on brick wall near apartment building and goes into a window which somehow contains an elevator because he appears on the roof from the elevator door. So they hop on roofs as Max praises PJ for the 50/50 axle grind. Wait; that was the move PJ was supposed to do? That was lame-o! PJ is losing his balance still as Max calls for the backside ally-oop and we get them going straight down from the skateboard, which is like seeing 1960's live action Batman climb up backwards. Ramp off the canopy; do a flip and goes through the conveniently placed manhole cover like a spiral door into the sewer. Riiigggghhhtttt. Skateboarding in the sewers ensues. Cut to Goofy bouncing through town and down the steps on a shopping cart as he hears Max's voice. He spins around a lamp post and goes through a cardboard like town that people today would point and say "THAT WAS FAKE~!". Somehow; Max and PJ pop up out of nowhere. I assume a manhole cover was animated during this; but I didn't see it at all; so they literally came up from the ground. DUMB! Max and Goofy hold hands as we get a mach truck heading straight for them. Oh; for Pete Pete sakes; RETIRE THAT SPOT, DAMMIT~! So we get a charming sequence of misinstruction as Max and Goofy pull to the left street to avoid the truck and then do the over/under truck spot for fun. Goofy ramps off something and does a million loop-de-loops; thus this spot needs to retire as well. Max calls it a Triple McTwist as PJ calls it cool. Kit: Big deal! Not. So the goofs with attitude (How fitting for two of the three there?!) ride on the train tracks on the bridge for a while. PJ demands this ride to be stopped and Goofy pushes his legs through the cart and uses his feet to grind into the train tracks and stop as Max bounces back and they crumple in a heap. That was pretty cool in fact. Goofy's feet are smoking as he pushes into the cart in the opposite direction as he proclaims that he can stop on a dime. Yeah; the concussion is gone. It's Goofy; what did you expect?!

Oh; and here comes the straight for a train spot, because apparently it's completely different to have a train heading straight for you then a mach truck. Whatever definition of "different" makes you happy, guys. Everyone bails and we have a chase sequence by a train. Somehow; the cart flies off the train tracks with everyone in tow as they avoid the train; leaving Goofy to land in a dumpster in the shopping cart. Max and PJ do more flips of fear and twist as Wanda Jean is looking like she is fearing for their safety as the skateboard and the kids crash into the middle of the skateboard ramp as Wanda is giddy over Goofy's performance. Oh; is she going to be so disappointed when she finds out that it's Max underneath the mask. Wanda comes over as Max pops up and she still think Max is Goofy; as Max almost blows his cover, but his Goofy voice sucks. Pete doesn't care either way because he wants to sell more cars as Goofy runs in filled with mud asking if he's late. Good; this thing was so stupid anyway. Wanda is confused as Max finally admits that he's Goofy Junior. So yes folks; Max is a stage name all along. HA! I knew the execs were the ones who foisted that name on him. I just needed the evidence to prove it. Wanda DQ's Goofy from the award as Goofy and Max embrace and apologize for being such idiots. PJ pops up and blows them off before fainting. HAHA! So we head for the following finish: We go to a hall at the awards banquet with everyone in formal gear as Wanda Jean is on stage as Curly Jenson won an award for losing the most hair since graduation. So; how do you test for that, Wanda? Because Goofy seems to have only two hairs on his head. And of course; Goofy was still invited to the awards banquet despite not achieving anything; thus rendering Max's insecurites pointless. As it should be. Goofy feels glum while the crowd cheers in the background because he failed him. No Goofy; Max failed Max. Max doesn't care because he thought Goofy was awesome out there anyway.

And you know what; this is awesome because Max is no longer insecure about Goofy's inability to win anything because he's still a great goofy father. Although; I could live without lying about taking on the ramp when Slammer chickened out since he never actually got on the ramp; but I would redub it to "You wanted to take on the ramp when Slammer chickened out" because the fact that he was willing to do it, inspite of his inability to do it showed a lot of courage. Not a lot of sense mind you; but no one cares about that in a cartoon anyway. So the two embrace as Wanda decides to close this ceremony with a special award. If you cannot guess who wins this; you have no business reading this rant. You see; it's for "Best Father & Son In Class" as Pete is blushing on cue thinking that he's won. Pete; you better just pre-emptively protests this right now; because we all know who won this trophy. In comes the trophy, up comes Pete and Wanda declares Goofy the winner. BWHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! I love real comments that aren't supposed to be real comments. Goofy does the butt bounce on Pete and Pete slams his own face into some chocolate goop as Goofy is so giddy to win. I should note that Peg does appear with Pistol in this final scene at the beginning, but doesn't speak. Max and Goofy shake hands in front of the trophy as the two make jokes about chips and blocks as Goofy playfully covers his mouth. Then they hug as we circle fade out to end the episode at 21:12. A fun episode with a lot of animation mistakes and a lot of wimps. The ending was great, however. *** (60%).

THE REVIEW LINE

Well; there isn't much to say about this episode that I haven't said in the rant. Goofy was awesome as always and Max actually did something awesome at the climax, finish and ending; which sort of made up for his assholish hatred of him being compared to Goofy. Once again; the setup was fine, but it took forever to happen because it's another eleven minute plot extended into twenty two minutes and Max's insecurities were just too silly for me to believe. And yes; his real name is Goofy Junior and even Max has confessed to that fact. Pete was really on his best behavior on this episode; which is always a plus and PJ was really good in this one. The animation and the logic was not good however and it's even more inexcusable when the storyline was very good for a change (inspite of the obvious pacing problems this show has). Overall; I enjoyed the story, but the animation quality control is spiraling out of control at this point and it's probably going to get worse before it gets better. So we end Disc one of this volume set with Close Encounters Of The Weird Mime which features alien subplots and Pete actually acting like a scummy realist. Yeah. So....

Thumbs in the middle for this episode and I'll see you all next time.
