Mega Man Ruby Spears: Showdown At Red Glutch Rant

Reviewed: 05/05/2022

Showdown Between Who Can Overload Their Tent First!

So, we begin season two of the blue dweeb's life with episode #14 (although on the DVD, it is episode #17) as near the Wild Western-themed town of Red Gulch, Dr. Wily discovers a meteor with crystals that can apparently make normal robots super-powered robots! However, the crystals also have an unexpected side effect of overloading the circuits on the robots using them after a random period of time. This dangerous turn makes Mega Man's job easier... or does it? How does this episode fare? Let's rant on shall we...?!

Showdown At Red Glutch is written by Michael O'Mahony and was directed by Katsumi Minoguchi.

We begin this episode in space as a large space rock randomly invades earth. Yeah, that's how season two starts as we head to NASA's science area as the science announcer is studying the meteorite heading to earth. One of the scientists looks like a babyface Dr. Wily as he's on the computer talking to Dr. Light on monitor. Dr. Light is at his lab studying this meteorite as it has radiation readings like no other material on earth. The meteorite apparently will land between the American and Mexican border in an area with no people there, which is fine. Yes, BS&P decision booking, but it's not like Dragon Ball Z because Michael wrote it this way instead of the writers writing something different and then the dubbers censoring it when it came to North America via the no kill rule. Cut to outside of Wily Castle RS as the real Dr. Wily is studying this meteorite as well, albeit for different reasons. Dr. Wily bangs on a machine calls it a something something analyzer which allows him to figure out stuff the other scientists cannot figure out. Blues is making an X on the spot on where it would land and Blues then talks about some train having a gold shipment that Dr. Wily was drooling out, which Dr. Wily sells it with anger anime # on the head. Dr. Wily basically wants to use the gold to build his world domination plans and the meteorite is landing a short distance away from the train, so two for the price of one spells double trouble for the blue dweeb and the Santa Claus wannabe. Oh, and the energy of the meteorite will make his robots immortal as Dr. Wily and his Wily Machine RS fly off from the castle. So, we head to an amusement town known as Red Glutch which is your typical inaccurate historic western-themed town of doom. The denizens are watching two cowboys doing the old trope of a pistol duel. There is a cowboy-equse announcer ruining the entire buzz of this spot. Shut up and let them draw! The silence with music is what makes these duels exciting. In the background of this town, the meteorite hits outside of said town and the wind causes the denizens of the town to panic and a lot of wind whips around, but otherwise, no real damage to the town at all. So, BS&P RULEZ~! The meteorite creates a crater as two helicopters arrive out of nowhere with one of them containing a gaggle of scientists, including the babyface looking Wily explaining that the meteorite's ground zero is in some abandoned mine. Both helicopters land near the crater as here comes the Wily Machine RS.

Cut to the sky shot of the cockpit with Dr. Wily and Proto Man as Blues calls the scientists "claim jumpers". Speak for yourself, Blues as Dr. Wily has a plan. Jump cut to the scientists wearing space suits which are supposed to be radiations suits. Pfft, whatever. Babyface Wily wants to look for meteorite fragements; but gets cut off by the shadow of the Wily Machine RS. Of course! Wily Machine RS lands, causes dust to whip and the scientists panic on cue. Suddenly, two lasers destroy the helicopters out of nowhere. Wait, what?! The back door of Wily Machine opens and out comes Dr. Wily without the raditation suit, making the scientists look like complete fools, along with Guts Man, Cut Man and the returning Snake Man. Get used to Snake Man folks, he'll be in at least FIVE more episodes after this one! Oh, and Drill Man returns after The Big Shake as well! Proto Man is the last one out in case anyone gives an elf. Dr. Wily is facing off with the babyface version of himself which is so comical at this point. They exchange hate for a while and then the robot masters surround the scientists and Guts Man wants to kill them outright. Dr. Wily is like "You need to be dewormed like Nappa!", as Blues wants the scientists to be used as slaves to dig up fragments. Of course! Jump cut to the desert with a jeep with Rock driving it, Dr. Wily being the front seat driver and Roll being literally the backseat driver. Bigots. Rush is also with us, because we need for him to do something really stupid later on. Dr. Light is on a transmitter to some guy named Professor Burner. I assume he's the Dr. Wily babyface clone from earlier since they were talking to each other earlier in the episode. Rock is speeding up and hitting every bump on the road, just to annoy and probably panic Dr. Light into submission. Or maybe not. Dr. Light is getting no response from Professor Burner and Roll deduces that interference from the meteorite is causing it. Sounds reasonable to me. Rock thinks otherwise as we jump cut to outside the entrance to a mine shaft. Head inside to the mine as the scientists are digging and out of their radiation suits without any signs of death, making them look like worrywart geeks in the process. Doctor Burner apparently finds a large green gem and Blues orders him to take it to Dr. Wily. Jump cut to Dr. Wily fixing a Battatton from Mega Man 4 (the mouth is an O, not a - like the Mega Man 2 one) as Doctor Burner arrives to show Dr. Wily the green gem. Dr. Wily takes the green gem and inserts it into the Battatton's forehead as apparently, these gems makes them super-powered; but no claims of immortality. I guess even Dr. Wily knows the limits after all as Dr. Burner gets off the greatest line of all time:

Professor Burner: Wily, you are a sick man!

Sadly, for Mr. Burner; it's all downhill from there. The Battatton flies away as Dr. Wily asks "Can a sick man do this?" and then cackles. The answer is obviously yes because that is what a homien sapien vampiris with cluster B maligan traits can do without regret nor remorse. The battatton takes a mine cart of rocks away as apparently, they forgot to add a scene change to make sure Cut Man, Guts Man, Drill Man and Snake Man were doing all of these feats of strength in the montage with the green gems on their foreheads. Yeah, that was dumb as we jump cut to outside as Rock stops the jeep. Roll notices Wily Machine RS right away as Rock is pissed off. Rock gets onto Rush Jet and the whole scene is staged so poorly that the mine is seen as miles away rather than less than one mile away. This has to be a BS&P decision, because this makes no sense. Roll takes over driving the jeep as Rock is monologing and then stops. We then see the Battatton from earlier coming out with the mine cart and throws rocks onto the side and makes the error of leaving the cart behind. Stronger, but still not smarter. Sigh. Rock gets into the mine cart as Rush is using his face to nudge the mine cart into the mine. Rock notices the slaves and robot masters, but Rock is so BUSTED by Blues, who is the only one not using a green gem. You wonder why Dr. Wily calls Rock a "blue dweeb"? So, they exchange threats and then shoot each other. Blues wins the fire fight and Rock falls down. Wait, what?! Look, if Proto Man is affected by the meteorite fragment...where is the fragement on his person?! I couldn't find it anywhere on him. This makes no sense at all.

The robot masters surround him as Guts Man is out for blood, although this is robot blood, so it makes more sense. So, Rock dodges as Cut Man's Rolling Cutter actually works this time and cannot be deflected. HA! Rolling Cutter goes into the mine walls and cuts some stone for a while. Drill Man sounds like Snake Man, so maybe a voice switching mistake was apparent here. More shooting as somehow, Blues finally shows the gem on his forehead. So, yeah; logic break which is inexcusable since all the other robot master were shown to have the gem on their foreheads before Blues. Blues stops this nonsense because he wants to kill Blues to end their feud. Rock shoots at two Battattons and all of them no sell the shot. Both headbutt Rock in the face and he goes right into the conveniently placed mine cart and is rolled out of the mine shaft. The mine cart hits a barricade and Rock tumbles down the hill to fetch a pail of Blues Nuts. AHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! POW! OUCH! Ummmm... Blues comes out and Rock's left hand is sparking for some reason as Blues demands Rock to join him. Rock obviously no sells this deal as the crack animation team reverses the scene with the right hand sparking and the left arm being his cannon. What a stupid logic break that was?! Rush runs out and Blues grabs Rush by the muzzle and throws Rush away. Blues fires his Blues Buster as a cliff and a giant rock is about to crush Rock as Proto Man calls this being between a rock and a hard place to end the segment almost eight minutes in. Okay episode thus far, but the real awesome moment is the eyecatcher are completely redone and are now 1:1 with the actual show! How about that?! The first one: Roll's awkward looking kick to the screen. Second one features Rush doing a sexy pose.

After the commercial break; Rock is on the ground shooting his buster and destroying the rock with ease. Yes, that's exactly what he does, just killing the suspense and making Blues look like a moron. Roll arrives in the jeep and jumps out, sliding down the cliff. Blues and the robot master decide to leave Rock at the mercy of the Battattons and bail back into the mine to do more work. The battattons stalk Rock as Rock takes a couple rocks to the face after the robot masters laugh at him. The crack animation team's continuity strikes it's ugly head again when Rock is dodging the Battattons: There were two of them originally, now there are four when the circuits of the battattons overloads as Rock claims that he feels like he's in a video game. BWHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! I was wondering when the writers were going to slip THAT one in. Hello Roll, sliding down the cliff a good two minutes too late as the number of Battattons increase to a dozen now. This would have been fine if the meteorite fragments allowed them to split into two like some enemies in Final Fantasy 3; but nope, more logic breaks. Roll and Rock bail as Rock wants Roll to run away; but his Rock Buster is busted, so Roll blows him off. I don't blame her, Rock's buster is busted. Both of them bailing is the only other option here as Roll brings out her fan cannon and it actually makes the Battattons sell. See, being a windbag does pay off. POW! OUCH! Ummm... One of the battattons actually dies into the mountain and Roll takes it as a trophy. Aww, my heart melted as Rock wants to go home for repairs now. So, we head to the Saloon in Red Glutch as the denizens are completely ignoring the fact that Rock is on a wooden table being repaired by Dr. Light. HAHA! Dr. Light seems so pissed off that he forgot to turn off Rock and Rock has to sell pain during the repairs. HAHA! When they are funny, they are uber funny. When this show isn't funny, it's unbearably not funny. Rock is repaired as the babyfaces deduce that the power is in the gems on their foreheads and Snake Man comes in out of nowhere and calls Rock a blue dweeb for the first time in his career and second time a robot master says it in this episode alone. Rock motions to Dr. Light and Roll to bail as Rock says you and what army and Snake Man says just him.

Rock shoots and it deflects off Snake Man and into a conveniently placed mirror near the bartender as he ducks. Yes, they had legit beer bottles in this scene, why do you ask? It's the old WE KNOW IT'S ALCOHOL, BUT WE AIN'T TELLING ANYONE~ spot! All the fake cowboys panic and bail as Snake Man tackles Rock down with ease, DUH! Rock takes a sick bump off the book of a piano. Denizens bail some more as Rock throws a wooden table and Snake Man punches the table into wooden splinters. Snake Man fires a search snake and it explodes into Rock in a hilariously awkward staged spot as Rock goes backwards through the window and takes a bump outside. This would be so much funnier if Snake Man didn't have the fragement in his forehead. Roll or the bartender has to keep Dr. Light hidden behind the counter which begs the question: WHAT?! Roll and Rush jump out and grab Snake Man from behind like a bunch of snakes. See what I did there? Roll seems to be trying to take the gem off Snake Man's forehead, which is incredible foresight on her part, but Snake Man is not having any of this. Snake Man throws Rush into the chandelier and gets wrecked into the wooden floor as a result. Roll blows off that as a challenge and Snake Man throws Roll into some shards of the remaining mirror with a really nasty bump and she goes back into the counter. Rock goes into the window and sees the Battatton is still alive. Rock plucks the gem out of it's forehead and Rock is now powered up. Uh-Oh! They are even now. Snake Man blitzes Rock, Rock grabs his left arm and crushes it partially before throwing Snake Man literally out of the saloon. Snake Man gets up outside, but his buster is busted and Snake Man is forced to bail now. Rock and Roll go outside as Rock is acting like the hate plague from Teddy Ruxpin, only he wants Wily in the same context to wanting to kill him. I wonder if that will play into the episode later on? Anyhow, jump cut to Dr. Light at a table using a magifying glass to check the meteorite fragment. Rock says that it worked out well, but he always felt that he was going to short-circuit. So, the short answer to my previous question is clearly a no. They exchange notes for a while as Rock needs the gem to compete against Wily's robot master. Dr. Light tells him to be careful because the fragment might literally kill him. Come on, now; it's clear what "destroy" is in this context. BS&P is a headache sometimes.

Head into the mine as all the scientists are put in mine jail via death march. Cut Man has since painted his head scissors red, or logic break occurs. You can decide which one is more believable. Drill Man closes the door as everything is set for Dr. Wily's next plan: catch the gold shipment train of doom which was his original plan before the meteorite touched down. In comes Snake Man to inform Dr. Wily that Rock got a piece of the meteorite fragment and Snake Man is short circuiting and smoking. The music ends with Dr. Wily having the funniest headache and yelling of all time. Dr. Wily recovers from that and it's all fine; because as long as Rock doesn't know about the train, everything is dandy. So, we scene change to the train track with the robot masters minus Snake Man, because he's still selling the short circuiting from earlier in the episode; which gives us the most absurd moment of Dr. Wily and Snake Man sitting on a horse carriage. Dr. Wily must be dying inside knowing that he has to use 1800's technology to make this scene work. Dr. Wily uses the transmitter to inform Guts Man to tear up the tracks and Guts Man sells and tears up the tracks. The orange train arrives as the conductor panics like crazy and tries to stop the train. I was expecting the train to stop on a dime even if it makes no sense because the conductor was human and therefore BS&P couldn't allow the train to crash and being totally destroyed in the process. Nope! The train literally got destroyed into splinters. WHAT?! Not to mention that the train is on fire and we never see the conductor again. They murdered the train conductor and I didn't think the show had the guts to do that actually. The robot masters are amused, but Blues isn't because here comes Sheriff Rock Man on Rush Jet wearing the gem stone as a badge. Guts Man is confused and Rock basically read a train sked. HAHA! The heels really think Rock is so stupid that they think he cannot read. That was funny. Fire fight begins as Rock is literally destroying the projectitles with kicks and punches; and somehow Rock kicks Drill Man, and Drill Man is somehow still intact. I don't know why they held back there, robots are allowed to crumble on this show anyway. Guts Man blitzes Rock, Rock dodges and kicks Guts Man in the back of the head. Guts Man slides out into some CACTUS JACKS OF DEATH for fun. Cut Man with Rolling Cutter which is blocked and destroyed badly. Cut Man blitzes and gets front face locked. HAHA!

I'm shocked that didn't make it in the CUTMAN IS INCOMPENTENT video, because that one was so funny. Rock throws him into the prickle patch with Guts Man. Rock ties them up with the most flexable metal rod he could find in a comedy spot. Then we get a confusing moment: Rock faces Drill Man. Drill Man fires Drill Bomb, but the scene is staged to make it look like Rock shot the Drill Bombs and they hit Drill Man. I think the spot was Drill Man fires, Rock deflects Drill Bombs and they hit Drill Man. The scene was animated way too fast to make it certain that it was a deflection spot. I mention this because Rock does the WEAPON GET SEQUENCE~! So, it has to be a deflection spot, otherwise; the continuity is totally shot. The wireframe is weird; but they still do an anime sequence anyway. Rock proclaims that he has Drill Man's weapon and we cut to Dr. Wily stomping his feet on the horse carriage like a spoiled little brat. Snake Man has apparently been written out by teleport...for the moment anyway. Dr. Wily somehow manages to throw a dozen Battattons at Rock in this sequence, which should not be possible. Maybe Dr. Wily really is either a robot or the alien was real and was a hologram in Mega Man 2 to throw Rock off the scent. Blues enters because of course he wants to kill his brother. Rock claims that he can dig that and somehow fires a blue drill bomb that turns metallic and explodes right in front of Blues. The animation continuity is wonky, but the spots are funny. Blues falls into a hole in the ground out of sight, and then Rock short-circuits right on cue and collapses to the ground. Dr. Wily is off the wagon cheering this on, of course. The Battattons fire at Rock as Cut Man cuts free and hits the Rolling Cutter right into the gem and shatters it. Rock goes down as Cut Man is loving life and Rush whimpers in as Blues jumps out of the hole as Rush is biting on Rock's helmet to pull him back; but no go. The robot masters all stalk Rock and cut promos about how nice guys finish last on the sceap heap. Rush is so gravely offended by this; he jumps and bites Guts Man's leg. HAHA! I was wondering when Rush would do this spot. Guts Man kicks the dog into the mountain side like a lawn dart as Dr. Wily arrives on the horse carriage which is so hilarious that I cannot contain my laughter.

Dr. Wily orders Cut Man and Guts Man to tie his ankle to a long rope attached to the horse because he's going on his last ride. This is so stupid when you put one second of thought into this, but it's so funny that it's worth it. Dr. Wily slaps the horse after cutting a promo in such a hilarious way that I couldn't take this seriously even if I tried. This works better on humans than OP robots. The horse rides away with Rock in tow through the desert as Dr. Wily and the robot masters return to the trolly with the gold as a bunch of dark skinned guards in blue clothing have their hands up. Sigh. Oh, and Snake Man is back! Told you he would come back sooner rather than later. Cut Man uses the Rolling Cutter per Dr. Wily's orders on the side door of the trolly and it opens to reveals large bars of gold. Blues is impressed by this as Dr. Wily is loving life. Seven Battattons arrive out of nowhere and it expands to two dozen when they lift up the train trolly into the air. Dr. Wily orders the robot masters to return to the mine for more work as we scene change to Rush popping his head out in a rock formation that is not even close to the one when he was drilled into the mountain side by Guts Man. Sigh. Rush calls for Rock and turns into Rush Jet. Rush jets away as we scene change to Rock being carried away by the horse in the dumbest funny spot you ever saw, made worse by the fact that Rock has woken up. Not to mention that the rope is breaking as they are headed straight for the cliffs. Rock panics as the horse jumps over the abyss and the rope snaps in TaleSpin-equse fashion. Rock free falls into the abyss below to end the segment nearly sixteen minutes in. Rush's eyecatcher is the same as the first one from earlier in the episode, except with the best eyecatcher promo of all time. HAHA! Yup, they all use the same artwork and Mega Man fade in animation for each character regardless of when the eyecatcher appears. The return was Roll's awkward kick spot. The animation has been wonky, but this has been more than entertaining as an episode.

After the commercial break; Rock is free falling and Rush comes in and makes the save on Rush Jet. They did a much better job of suspense here because Rock is supposed to be out of energy due to short circuiting by the meteorite fragment earlier, so it made sense for Rock to be hapless. That being said, it's still stupid when Rock could have easily unwrap the rope from his ankle since he was awake. If he had been out the entire time and woke up when he was free falling, that would have been a better spot. Rock is grateful for the save and we head to a blacksmith building which is next to a modern building. Ooops! That kills the continuity of the western theme that they have been shooting for here. Dr. Light is telling Rock to save his strength during the repairs as Rock explains to Roll that he's screwed because Cut Man destroyed the fragment that gave him the power. Good thing Rock didn't actually say it was Cut Man, that would have been embarrassing considering Cut Man's gimmick in this show. Dr. Light gives Roll his energy chip and Roll discovers a tiny speck of the fragment on the energy chip as Dr. Light notices it as well. Sadly, it's not enough to make Rock super strong; but Dr. Light puts it in a metal container because Dr. Light is going to use it to short-circuit the robots via remote control. Dr. Light has a plan, apparently. Rock is still out as we scene change to the scientists still working as slaves outside being watched by Battattons as the scientists are putting stuff into mine carts. Dr. Wily is loving life and telling all of us that he's planning world domination without any saying it; while oodling over the meteorite fragments inside the mine cart. Jump Cut to Mega Man being all shiny in Red Glutch town. Roll enters as they walk around the area assuring the denizens that there is nothing to worry about at all. Like I would believe someone who is a registered blue dweeb. We all know Rock is lying about being immortal as a Battatton is watching from the bell tower as Rock shows a "big meteorite fragment" in his right hand out of nowhere. Battatton flees the scene as Rock proclaims that they took the bait as he has a white pearl in his hand now. So, then we get a long sequence of the babyfaces moving mirrors and pots inside and outside; and the end result is to reflect light into one spot in the middle of town. Rush and Dr. Light run in as Dr. Light informs Rock that the Battatton has made it to the mine and it's time for showdown time. Yeah, I'll bet!

Head to outside the mine as we discover that the Battatton in question is a two way radio as we hear Rock and Roll's promo from earlier, and Dr. Wily is PISSED. So, he orders all the heels to wreck Rock and get the fragment back. Scene change to town as the heels all arrive with full force behind them. Jump cut to the blacksmith shop with a clear modern building in the background as Dr. Light is repairing the chip, only with the fragment infused into the board this time around. Dr. Light explains that this should short circuit their powers for good this time, I'm guessing it destroys the meteorite fragments in their foreheads. Why do I get the feeling someone in creative has a kink for headshots?! Because that is the only way I can see this plan working. Let's see how BS&P handles this scene. Dr. Light puts the board into Rock's buster and Rock is happy to walk out to de-energize Dr. Wily's plans. Rock walks into town, the robot masters and Blues do the same. The robot masters all cut promos as they act like professional wrestlers while the Battattons watch on. In comes Rock acting like a zombie judging by the promo he cuts when he shows up. Blues gives Rock one more chance to join the dark side; but Rock is going to let things go because he ain't joining this dark side at all. Blues claims that he's not ready for Cryme Time...ERRR...I mean "crime time". Fire fight ensues as Rock dodges barrels and flees to under a real horse's carriage; showing just how cheap Dr. Wily was with the previous horse carriage from earlier. Guts Man destroys people's properties with impunity, but he's a heel so it doesn't matter. Guts Man for the second time in this episode alone calls Rock a blue dweeb as Rock dodges some more as the horse carriage gets destroyed. Rock is trying to get the heels to the spot with the light as Blues wants Rock to reconsider and Rock decides to reconsider and back up. Blues walks forward as Rock calls him an older brother just to butter up Blues. Rock backs up some more as the robot masters all foolishly come together and then Rock decides....NAH; I was right the first time! Rock shoots his buster and it deflects off of everything and hits the Battattons and robot masters, destroying the gem stones in their foreheads. Now, the problem with this is: Rock's buster is OP'ed, so somehow, glass reflects his buster and literally nothing else. That's really stupid.

Rock proclaims that they are going to jail; but Blues is like "Nope!" and the robot masters blast at Rock's feet and Rock falls down anyway. Rock is still a blue dweeb. Roll runs in proclaiming that they are escaping, but Rock whistles to Rush Jet and out comes Rush Jet. Rock gets on Rush and flies off as Roll bails and returns on the green WRJS. WHAT?! We haven't seen this at any other point in the episode. This is so stupid. We head back to the mine as Dr. Wily decides to load the mine cart of gems into the Wily Machine RS and worry about the gold later. Bad move because here comes Rock as hew shoots the Rock Buster and destroys the mine cart with the fragments, making them disappear in the process. Dr. Wily is so pissed off that he's crying like a baby as Blues grabs Dr. Wily and then disappears via teleport as we do the My Fair Baloo after you spot that sucks, but Dr. Wily gets in first and then somehow the robot masters still get in despite the fact that they couldn't get in when Dr. Wily was behind them. I love this episode; but the logic breaks are so bummy! Wily Machine RS flies away without further incident and that is that. Roll arrives and is not amused by the fact that Dr. Wily got away before she had any fun; but there is the task of the scientists being free, and so Rock and Roll fly into the mine and we fade to black. We return to the town as the sheriff announcer has return to address the denizens of the town of Red Glutch as Rock is the new honoray sheriff in town as the denizens cheer. Rock is given the goofy sheriff's hat as Roll, Dr. Light and Rush are in the conveniently placed jeep. Rock puts on the sheriff's hat as we get an anime background closeup of said hat to end the episode at 24:00 approx. The final eyecatcher has Rock pointing his cannon at the screen on Rush Jet, a big no-no in children's cartoons nowadays. They didn't change the non-verbal eyecatcher at all. The eyecatcher artwork is awesome, and this episode was highly entertaining, but the continuity was shot to hell in this episode. Call this *** 1/4 (65%).

THE REVIEW LINE

Well, our first episode of season two was actually a really fun and entertaining episode with a lot of funny moments. Dr. Wily on a horse carriage is so many buys! The story itself was solid; but it was mostly little nitpicking logic breaks that hurt the episode's quality. From continuity errors, to coloring mistakes, to logic breaks from the writers and the whole horse last ride sequence was so dumb that it was funny. It was a fun episode to rant on and the story was fairly good, so overall; a good episode that could have easily been a thumbs up episode if it wasn't for stupid logic. I cannot say anything more about this. So....

Thumbs in the middle for this episode and I'll see you all next time.
