Peppa Pig Series Eight #2 Rant

Reviewed: 09/07/2023

Probably The End? Maybe!

Okay fans; I have now decided to rant on this series full time, because I do in fact like this show enough that I can handle the best and worst of the Pig family from Great Britian. Time to resume Peppa Pig as this is officially the eighth series in the last 18+ years or so. YAY! Or maybe not! Today's episode list features a four part holiday on the sea. YAY! How do these episodes fare? Let's rant on shall we..?!

All the episodes are done by Neville Astley, Mark Baker and Phil Hall. Animation is done by Astely Baker Davies animation; with the two mentioned creators and Phil Davies.

Cruise Ship Holiday: We waste no more time than is needed because this episode is #378-#381 on the animation paper and the episode opens at the little house on the hill as the Pig Family is greeted by Granny and Grandpa Pig with the yellow car pointing down the steep hill. Sadly, we'll never see the car roll down the hill because this show hates money, or something. Mummy Pig has Goldie in it's fishbowl and Peppa and George are chasing each other using a shopping bag. Why?! Why not?! The grandparents ask if the adults are okay with Peppa and George joining them on a holiday trip and Daddy Pig is fine with it as long as they call on the phone. So, the kids and the grandparents go into the car and LET'S GO~! The yellow car is now on a boring road as Peppa asks where they are going and Granny Pig states that they are going on a cruise. I should point out that this aired about a month before the sequel to the My Friend Peppa Pig game, which the theme is a cruise ship sailing around the world, including London even though Peppa and George live in the UK in storyline. It's comical. Anyhow, Grandpa Pig states that it's like being on his boat, but just a little big bigger. Remember that for the next scene as we jump cut to the yellow car parking on the docks. Peppa notices it right away as we zoom out to see that the cruise ship is so big that it literally requires it's own lift. The kids and the grandparents all go into the lift and go up onto the deck of the cruise ship as they are greeted by Captain Otter and her second appears to be Daddy Cat, although there is palette swap of Daddy Cat guarding the life earlier. I'm guessing that it's not Daddy Cat because Daddy Cat would have made small talk with Peppa since Peppa is friends with Candy Cat anyway. Captain Otter checks the tickets and everything is fine as the group goes to their cruise cabin which is basically a hotel room on a cruise ship. Peppa and George love it and Grandpa Pig loves some sea air on the look out; but his buzz is ruined by Mr. Stallion and Mrs. Corgi, because of course! Grandpa Pig bails to explore the ship with the kids as Corgi and Stallion wave goodbye and don't care. They just wanted to see Grandpa Pig be annoyed and they succeeded. The kids and grandparents are exploring the ship as George gets giddy over a conveniently placed paddle pool and splashes water for fun. Peppa blows him off because they are just exploring, you see; George is not amused by this. Granny Pig decides to take a break and sit in the lawn chair to supervise George in his splashing as Peppa and Grandpa Pig can continue exploring as apparently, this cruise ship has turned into a mini mall when you go downstairs. Yikes! Cafes, video arcades and even a elevator; because one elevator to get into the cruise ship is not enough it seems.

Peppa and Grandpa Pig take the lift and this leads to the soft play area as Peppa is all giddy and enters the soft play area. Oh no; I remember the last time we had this happened, I have a feeling that this will not end well for Grandpa Pig at all. Mr. Rhino is reading the newspaper outside, which means we finally get the debut of Rohan Rhino, whom has been seen multiple times on Peppa Pig, but never in a speaking nor focused role until now. Rohn is wearing a light green shirt as he and Peppa exchange greetings for a while. Grandpa Pig tells Peppa that they need to return to the paddling pool and Peppa agrees to it as she says farewell for now to Rohan. Geez, Rohan did absolutely nothing here; hopefully he gets more spots in the next three episodes of this cruise. Grandpa Pig and Peppa go through the mini-mall which seems to have more shops than your average size mall. Yup, they are lost as usual. Still less pathetic than Daddy Pig getting lost since he reads maps upside down. Jump cut back to the western paddling pool as Granny Pig has had enough of waiting, so she will search for Grandpa Pig with George covered in a white towel. Jump cut to Grandpa Pig and Peppa Pig going up the stairs to meet with Captain Otter's second and Grandpa Pig asks where the paddling pool is and Second Cat (that's my story and I'm sticking to it!) points to the conveniently placed door as the entrance. Grandpa Pig is happy as he and Peppa go through the door; but it is a SWEVERE because there are TWO paddling pools, just like there are two cafes! Is this a cruise ship, or a future city once the land all floods due to human global fuckery?! I'm not doing cameos here, most of them are not the main characters anyway. Anyhow, Grandpa and Peppa meet Captain Otter and we discover that there are TEN paddling pools on this ship! Damn, you could have fed the poor for ten years if you only had TWO paddling pools and one cafe! Captain Otter proclaims that they can tell how to get back to their cabin by the ticket ID which is Blue Square, White Triangle, 6. Luckly, the arrows point the way as Peppa and Grandpa Pig turn around, go downstairs and make it to door number six. They open the door and there is Granny Pig and George Pig to greet them as I discover that the cruise ship does have a pizza delivery service. How civilized, indeed?! Everyone sits down to eat pizza as Peppa loves this cruise ship as we see the cruise ship sailing AFTER HAPPY HOUR (after dark) to end the episode at 4:30. This was just a fine start; but damn Rohan's debut was literally thirty seconds long. Even Penny Polar Bear had a better debut than this. ** (40%).

Holiday On The Sea: We continue on with the episode opening with the cruise ship sailing the boring sea as we zoom into Cabin Blue Square, Triangle, 6 with Peppa and George sleeping in beds and getting used to the fact that they are not bunk beds anymore. Peppa and George wake up all excited as Granny Pig is reading the tour guide while Grandpa Pig wants to get breakfast first. Granny Pig proclaims that there are TWO choices here: A Mermaid Breakfast or a Dinosaur Breakfast; which we all know what George will choose, wink! wink! nudge! nudge! So, we head to the dinosaur cafe, the THIRD cafe on this cruise ship alone, meaning that there are at least FOUR cafes on this cruise ship. Everyone is seated as Caveman Cat arrives (because the writers believe the dinosaurs era is like the Flintstones, it is not) and they get dinosaur eggs, which is just normal eggs covered in spots. Then, things promptly get into "deceptive advertising" terrority because in comes Pirate Pete (a brown dog with a red beard, dressed up as a pirate. Why they didn't just use the human from the show is beyond me? It's not like Peppa hasn't met humans before in storyline) and Mrs. Mermaid who is a gray cat dressed up like a mermaid. Wait, so we are getting both breakfastes despite it clearly being a dinosaur theme? Oh wait, they are hear to inform the entire cafe that they have a fancy dress ball lined up for the entertainment tonight featuring the two. Okay, that's fine. I believe honey toast and juice was also served with the eggs. The duo leaves as there is lots of time to kill as I discover that mini golf is on this cruise ship; but George says no to all the activities presented by Grandpa Pig. Okay, what happens next is so hilarious: Caveman Cat states that everything is available for free...except for the Ride On Potato ride. Guess which activity George chooses in the next scene: the Ride On Potato Ride. Yes, George supports microtransactions. He is hellbent on draining Grandpa Pig's bank account. Funniest moment of the cruise so far as Granny Pig decides to join with Peppa while Grandpa Pig supervises George. Peppa and Granny go to the trampoline area and Peppa takes her shoes off and bounces on a trampoline as we see Rohan Rhino back bouncing on one. They make small talk for awhile as Rohan wants to join with Peppa in the splash pool and both kids decides to get permission from their parents on that one.

Jump cut to George having the time of his life draining Grandpa Pig's small change account. I hope Mr. Stallion and Mrs. Corgi show up and laugh him out of the building for this because this is hilariously awesome. The music just accents the moment perfectly. Not quite Peppa calling a square dance level of hilarious, but considering how boring this cruise has been so far, I'll take it. Jump cut to the splash pool as Granny Pig is reading something while Peppa and Rohan are giggling and sliding down the slide...back to the George's quest to kill Grandpa Pig's credit rating. Sadly, Grandpa Pig's small change account is now zero and George has to accept defeat. Damn, this would have been even funnier if Mrs. Corgi and Mr. Stallion showed up; but it's Granny and Peppa Pig, so it's time to freshen up for the show tonight. Jump cut to outside as the cruise is approaching sunset. We head to the theater as everyone has dressed up as pirate, natch. Daddy Rhino, Mummy Rhino, Mrs. Corgi, Mr. Stallion and Mummy and Daddy Elephant have joined Granny, Grandpa, Peppa and George seated. On stage is Pirate Pete to address the audience as he invokes the TEDDY RUXPIN SONG OF DOOM while using a prop pirate boat. I swear that this would have been suited for Captain Dog or even Granddad Dog; but Captain Dog cannot do it due to THE STIPS~! Pirate Pete captures a mermaid, yawn. Mrs. Mermaid protests being called a fish, yawn. There is way too much exposure from the deckhands to make this sound believable; but this crowd doesn't care anyway. There is an island prop stage complete with a purple CHEST OF DEMONS, and I'm not talking about Pirate Pete's chest here. The funny moment is Mrs. Mermaid winking to the audience after forgetting the FCC WORD OF THE DAY because she has the memory of fish. That one I laughed out loud. Pirate Pate asks for the audience and Peppa Pig cannot say abracaba to save her life, so she has the memory of a fish. Fitting since Peppa is dressed as a mermaid for this event. Then the chest opens anyway, Mrs. Mermaid climbs into the chest, the chest closes, the audience gets it right and Pirate Pete says the words, opens the chest and it's filled with plastic gold coins. Of course! What a fool I am?! Too bad, I know the secret to the Buried Alive match in WWE, so I know that Mrs. Mermaid went through a secret trap door and is underneath the rolling sand dune anyway.

But wait?! Now we have to bring back Mrs. Mermaid and Peppa Pig accepts this challenge as she runs on stage. Pirate Pete of course calls her Pepper Pig, as Peppa and company say the magic words; a puff of smoke ensues and out of the chest comes Mrs. Mermaid and that's the end of the show. That's the end of the show. Everyone claps slowly for that one as we scene change to the cruise ship AFTER HAPPY HOUR at the look off with the grandparents and the kids in their pjs wrapping up today's activites. But wait, Grandpa Pig gets splooshed and we see a giant whale next to the cruise ship; because why not?! The narrator says it all as the whale is smiling to end the episode at 4:30. That was a fun ending to a better episode in general. Although Rohan has so far been a nothing character at this point. *** 1/2 (70%).

Tropical Day Holiday: Episode opens the exact same opening as the previous episode, only when Peppa Pig wakes up, she's then starts reading the tour guide. HAHA! But wait, there will be no activities on the boat today, because Granny and Grandpa want to leave the boat for an island exploration day because you see, cruises offer off boat stuff like exploring an island since they are still a long way from home. So, they use the lifeboats to bring customers down to island level, since there is no modern elevator on the island to use, which I suspect is Hawaii, given the amount of Hawaiian culture references being used here. Jump cut to the marketplace which is a tropical version of the episode The Market. One of the booths appears to have Mummy Mouse selling stuff. Hope it's not scary sounds, that is a failed venture that Mandy Mouse would laugh out of the building. Since they are sighseeing, they might as well buy some gifts for the ride back home. Grandpa Pig picks a tasteful tropical shirt, while Granny Pig picks a tropical gnome. Not enough of a twist to impress me Granny, sorry. More gifts as Peppa confuses a ukelele with a guitar, Tiny Tim is rolling in his grave somewhere. Ironically, this one of the few words George can correctly pronounce! Awesome! Oh, and despite not having a lift, the stores use mobile devices to scan credit cards. That made me laugh. George ukelele playing is far better than mine and even that made the grandparents cringe. Also funny. In comes Mummy Rhino and Rohan Rhino has a wooden box with holes in it. Apparently, Rohan has a pet beetle (bird?) named Bellid (?), which is the most character development Rohan has had since the arc started. Peppa then realizes and panics because she needs a present for Goldie, thus justifying Goldie's presents at the beginning of the first episode in this arc! Peppa describes Goldie and Rohan deduces that Goldie wants a plush Wailmer from Pokemon basically. Geez, it almost looks like one actually. So, Granny agrees to buy it not caring if this was the right present for Goldie or not; nor the possible copyright infringement from The Pokemon Company; and here comes Mr. Stallion and Mrs. Corgi to poke fun on Grandpa Pig again. Too late, old chaps. You had a better chance of appearing when George was draining Grandpa Pig's bank account with the Ride On Potato in the last episode. Notes are exchanged and Grandpa Pig wisely bails to make a phone call before he blushes for real.

The kids and grandparents make it to the house with the only red phone on the entire island and it's not even a payphone. HA! Granny Pig dials the phone and wonders what is going on at the little house on the hill. By the way, we jump cut to the little house on the hill AFTER HAPPY HOUR calling up Daddy Pig in his bed with Mummy Pig who were sleeping and now have to answer the cellphone with the lights on. Mummy Pig's look is priceless, as to say "Why didn't you call before you went to bed on the cruise ship?". BWHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Granny Pig is so clueless, just daring Mummy Pig to give her the stink eye in this scene. Yes, Granny Pig decided to call up Daddy Pig in the middle of the night. I laughed my ass off seeing this. Peppa is on the phone and wants to see with Goldie, Daddy Pig turns on the lights, goes downstairs to the television where the fishbowl is and puts the phone near Goldie. Peppa then recaps the entire trip for Goldie and Peppa sounds like she's hyperventilating while talking. This is the funniest part of the entire trip, bar none. Peppa then asks: Do you remember me? I died and went to heaven after that one as Mummy Pig comes in to ask if everyone is all right; and I'm certain she is screaming inside to want to strangle Granny Pig for waiting until RIGHT F'N NOW to call them! George gets the phone and proclaims that the best part was...Potato. Okay, this might be the best Peppa Pig episode since Bowling now. The adults are confused, the wah-wah sound is used. I laugh my ass off again. We jump cut back to the lifeboat sailing to the cruise ship and being lifted up. Everyone gets off and they probably could have ended it right there or even gave us more interactions with Rohan Rhino; but Cartoon Duck Syndrome has to strike again because we still have less than a minute to go. At least here, there is a fourth episode to go before finishing, so it's not really CDS. Guess who they meet next? Mr. Fox and his version of the House Of Everything. At least Mr. Fox has talent...of abandoning Freddy Fox very chance he gets. They exchange notes as Mr. Donkey buys a red beard during this. Yeah, whatever. Grandpa Pig wants food and we end the episode at 4:30 with the grandparents and the kids in formal gear eating pasta with sauce on the deck of the cruise ship. I see someone succeeded in getting that tomato sauce on the pasta after the Families incident. Sunset occurs and the cruise ship is nearing it's end route now. The best episode of the lot and I doubt anything will top it now. **** 3/4 (95%). Sadly, Rohan has proven to be just there at this point.

Sailing Home: We end this four parter with the episode opening on the cruise ship sailing the boring seas, only this time we zoom in to the safe cafe mentioned in the first episode of this arc. How about that?! The grandparents and the kids are sitting at the table as Peppa doesn't want to go home. I guess she realizes that human global fuckery is irreversible and this is her only place where she can be a whole troll. However, Granny mentions Mummy and Daddy and Peppa changes her mind, because she really wants to be with Goldie. However, we have four minutes left in this entire arc and so let's do more stuff to kill time. George wants the Ride On Potato ride of course, because he's not done draining Grandpa Pig's bank account yet. So, Peppa anbd Granny decide to go to the splash pool again. A million things on this cruise ship and they all want to go back to what they did first. Jump cut to Granny and Peppa walking on deck near the mermaid splash pool as Rohan Rhino and Peppa exchange notes. Apparently, the animators just kept Peppa in her regular gear instead of a swimming costume, I don't know why. Out comes Pirate Pete panicking because his chest has been stolen. Nah, your chest is right there and there is no hope for that anyway. Captain Otter arrives as apparently, Mrs. Mermaid is gone, too; as they do the memory of a fish again. Rohan asks why he doesn't use magic and Pete has to weasel word his way to saying that he cannot use magic and Peppa basically calls him out on it anyway. Captain Otter suggests having the children join in the search. Good, it's about time Rohan Rhino got something to do in this arc. Peppa suggests going to the dinosaur cafe to look for her because that's where we met Mrs. Mermaid two episodes ago. A good lead, but sadly she's not there and the cafe is closed according to Caveman Cat. So, the next place is the Showtime Stage, again, another place they met two episodes ago. I'll give the writers credits, they are doing a good job of paying off the continuity from two episodes ago and making it mean something. Sadly, Mrs. Mermaid is not here and somehow the cleaner knows who Peppa Pig and Rohan is without meeting them once. Huh. Peppa decides to go shopping and it's off to see Mr. Fox basically cleaning up his shop to leave as well. No dice there, either and Mr. Fox's response is kind of creepy actually. Mr. Fox offers a fishing net and the babyfaces are like, nope; and bail into the mini mall. No luck there either.

It looks like this angle is going to continue until literally thirty sec..Oh wait, they found her at the Mermaid Splash Pool. HAHA! It makes sense, but couldn't you wait another minute or two before finding her?! Better yet, have Rohan deduce that she must be at the Mermaid Splash Pool because that would make the most sense and put Rohan over at least. Yup, they are rebuilding Peppa to be an unstoppable monster again. Mrs. Mermaid went to the tropical fruit store to buy cubed mangoes for the kids to eat. That's awfully convenient of her, isn't it?! Pirate Pete wants to say goodbye; but Rohan and Peppa refuse to say goodbye because Rohan hasn't been put over yet. Umm, that's decent enough; you are now over Rohan. I betcha Rohan will be at playgroup once the new episodes of Peppa Pig are released. Granny suggests being pen pals basically; and all is well as Rohan and Peppa are good friends now. Uh-oh! Suzy Sheep isn't going to like this, and those trees are no longer safe from her wrath. Granny proclaims that there will be other holidays as George has to say goodbye to the Ride On Potato which has to be the cruelist goodbye in Peppa Pig history. One of the ushers empties the ride and we are at the docks now. The grandparents and kids have their stuff as Captain Otter thanks them for their patronage and Peppa proclaims that they'll be back with Mummy and Daddy Pig this time. That is actually true, but you have to play the video game Peppa Pig World Adventures (available now on PC, Nintendo Switch, XBOX (One, Series) and PlayStation (4/5)) and discover new characters not in the mainline nor Peppa Pig Tales series yet! Speaking of the parents, the kids and grandparents take the elevator down to meet them and Goldie the fish in the fishbowl. At least Goldie didn't get all big and fat like the Italian holiday in Series 4. Anyhow, we exchange notes, pleasure thoughts and Grandpa Pig showing regret. HAHA! Goldie loves the whale by the way as Peppa Pig cuts a promo and everyone does the backsplash laugh as we zoom out to see the cruise ship to end the episode at 4:30. This was very good finish to a mixed bag cruise ship; but Rohan's debut was more disappointing than Penny Polar Bear's. *** 1/2 (70%).

THE REVIEW LINE

Well, this is probably the last of the main Peppa Pig episodes until at least 2024. Yeah; I have been sitting on this review for almost five months now with no sign of the mainline series continuing at this point since Peppa Pig Tales has been taking over. I don't know at this time what is going on with the mainline series and right now, it's probably best to end it until further notice. I think they might do the official reboot in 2024 since Peppa Pig will be 20 years old next year (and Chargemen Ken will be officially 50 years old on April Fools Day, maybe I should do additional commentary on it like I did with TaleSpin next year as part of Easter Sadism. Anyhow; this arc was mostly a mixed bag with the tropical island stuff being the best, and the worst being the start where Rohan Rhino was a nothing character who had almost nothing to show for it in the entire four parter. This is the problem with the self-centered nature of Peppa Pig: When Peppa Pig is the star and everyone is a geek, character development is way down the list of things to care about. If this series officially continues, I hope I see more character development of new characters at least; in particular, the two mommies of Penny Polar Bear since Peppa Pig Tales doesn't want anything to do with them even though Mandy Mouse does get appearances on those shorts from time to time. So...

Thumbs up for Tropical Day Holiday, thumbs down for Cruise Ship Holiday and thumbs in the middle for the rest. I'll see you all next time.
